   Since my most recent reinstallation of IE8 It frequently displays that window.
   I want to disable it but can't see how.
   I would guess that it's something in Internet Options - or not?

   Give this a try, in IE8 click Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab > Internet Zone then click Custom Level and then in the settings box scroll to miscellaneous then under Display Mixed Content you should have the Enable, Disable, Prompt options.
   
   Only issue is by disabling you leave a security prompt out that "could" leave you vulnerable on any unsecure or fake site.
