IE8 - hanging on new tab or new window

I hope I'm putting this in the right place.

Hopefully the title says it all really.

Frequently, when opening either a new tab, new window, or even starting IE8 again, when the tab/window is starting, all I get in the tab title is "connecting", and will not navigate to either the page I requested, or my home page. Once this has occurred, the only way I can navigate to a different page, is to use a tab/window which has successfully loaded (copy/paste the web address).

I'm not sure if i've described that properly, but hopefully someone can make some sense.

I'm operating a HP compaq; intel core 2 duo CPU 2.2ghz, 3.00 ram with Vista home premium, SP2 installed.

Have run spyware/anti virus etc. All seem clear - apart from the usual cookies.

    Any advice greatfully appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance.

Start IE 8 without any addons and see if you still get the same problem; if not, then you know one of the addons is causing the problem.

Thanks Plodr. I assume I 'disable' everything under 'manage add-ons'? I've just looked and there's a fair amount there. Is there likely to be anything I should leave, or will IE still load ok without any add-ons?

No need to do all that. You can start IE with no add-ons through All Programs > Accessories > System Tools

    Ah, thank you.

I've done that. Will report back if problems continue.

That didn't last too long. Despite all add-ons being disabled, I've just had the problem re-occur. So, what can I try next?

Many thanks for your continuing help.

Oh, and how do I get the add-ons back? I looked for help on this, and all I needed to do (apparently) was restart IE, but that hasn't worked. :confused

Restarting IE normally is all that should be necessary. You don't by any chance have IE7Pro installed do you?

no, Just IE8. I'm sure I followed instructions properly. When I go to Tools:manage add ons, they're all there - enabled. :(

As long as you are sure about IE7Pro. It's an add-on which worked great with IE7 but causes the sort of problems you are having when run in IE8.

Other than that I'll have to leave this one to others, as it might be malware.

    Hi

Try this as its helped others with similar issue, with IE closed and as you have Vista you will need to Click the Start button and in the Start Search box type CMD and then when it shows in the search list right click it and choose Run as Administrator, then type this line of text regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and hit enter (note the space between 2 and a).

    Then try IE again,

    Thanks again.

Plodr - I already had the 'compatability mode' set, but thanks for your further advice.

Halo - I've done and you suggested, now I just have to see if the 'problem' happens again. As it's an 'intermittent' issue, this may take a few days for me to find out.

As Arnie says "i'll be back" :cool :wave

haven't had the problem yet, so perhaps Halo's solution sorted it.

Now, I just need to get my add-ons back. Can anyone tell me how?

    Many thanks.

Just start IE normally and all the addons should still be there because you did not remove anything.

If it isn't there, click manage addons and select enable.

Thanks Plodr, I had done that but still wasn't getting my Google toolbar, although I've now found out it was 'hiding'. :-o So I guess I do have everything up and running. :-D

OK, I spoke too soon. Have just had IE 8 stalling on opening a new tab (via clicked link). the status bar just keeps showing 'loading', but it never reaches it's 'destination'.

    Can anyone suggest anything else?

    Many thanks.

I'd probably remove IE 8 and return to IE 7 provided IE 7 was working okay for you.
For some IE 8 just never seems to work.

Thanks Plodr. I don't recall any problems with IE7, so perhaps that's the best idea.

Now, is this an easy thing to do? As you can probably tell, i'm NOT a 'geek', lol. And I don't want to do anything wrong.....rolleyes

Reread my post at #12 and click the 2nd link.

Let me ask you a question, do you run SpyBot or SpywareBlaster?

Thanks Plodr, I'd missed that link.

I run Superantispyware, can't remember why I switched from Spybot, but there was a reason. I think Superantispyware was recommended somewhere.

    Hi

May not be IEs fault, do check with your ISP on any connection and speed issues for you?

Also what you could do but while its a fix for connection issues I dont think its what is causing your issue being intermittent is to clear the DNS Resolver Cache, sound harder to do that it is ;)

As you have Vista you need to open a Command Prompt as admin so click Start > type CMD into the Start Search box and it will show in the list then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator, then type ipconfig /flushdns (note space between g and /) and hit enter.

Then try IE again and see if it crops up.

Make sure you have lastest Google Toolbar if you are going to use it, TBH I never advocate using toolbars only end up causing issues.

Also if this appears again after the above try this, while it says its for Enterprise class useage its for home use also http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929868

You may also need to disable IPv6 as some sites dont like the next generation TCP/IP version so to do this follow THIS simple steps

The reason I asked is that both SpyBot's and SpywareBlaster's long list of restricted sites can cause hang up problems with IE 8. I was trying to figure out if that was the basis of your non-loading tabs.

    Thanks Plodr/Halo.

Am working through Halo's recommendations, one by one. Will report back as and when necessary.

    thank you.

Have you tried reinstalling IE8? Sometimes this helps resolve issues similar to what you are experiencing.

Ok, back after just a couple of weeks. Am still experiencing this problem from time to time.

If I go for the re-install IE8 option, would you mind telling me how I do that please? I think I'd rather see if I can get this sorted, before giving up and going back to IE7.

    Thank you. :)
