If an External HD is not Defragging is this the start of the end?

I have a Maxtor External HD that I use for backups and a little storage. It is probably 2 years old and gets used everynight for Retrospect to back up Setting, files...and every so often a Full disk Backup.

If this drive is having trouble defragging and more often than not, can't get past 3% saying "moving files"...is this the beginning of the end?

If it is, and since I have lost so much data over the years, I will get another External HD immediately for Backing up......

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you

It's possible. Visit the Seagate web site (they now own Maxtor) and download their HD diagnostic. Run the advanced test and see what it says. If it passes (sometimes dying drives pass somehow), maybe try a different defrag util. In any case, you may want to back up anything that's considered important in case it decides to go belly up on you....

Also check how much space you have left on the external hard drive, if it is less than a gb, it can take a long time, or , stop like that.
Try deleteing anything you do not need to give more defrag space.
