    Hi Roger,

    Yes, you can as long as your installed hard drive does not exceed the 500GB of that external hard drive.

    The easiest way to get everything(including your Operating System) would be to Image your Hard Drive onto that external.

    If you are running Windows 7, you can just follow the steps listed here.

    Your os depending may not have drivers that work with the new computer.

    I think he wants to create a cloned backup image, on an external HDD.

    You will need cloning software such as EZGig, Acronis, or a freeware favorite EASEUS. It's pretty straightforward but post any questions you may have if indeed that is what you want to do.
