If I Leave My Computer On & Turn My Monitor Off Will It Ruin?

I occasionally walk away from my pc to eat, watch tv, or talk on the phone. But I know I'll be right back on the pc and I don't want the system to stress by shutting off the pc and turning it back on. Because everyone knows that each time you turn on your pc the system is bolted with electricty and the sudden shock jolts it's lifetime away. What I do when I walk away from my pc when I know I'll be back again, is turn off the monitor. That way when I get back all I have to do is turn the monitor on again and my pc is there ready to go. I do this as well to save energy.

    My questions are:

    1. Is this a good or bad thing to do?

    2. Will this harm my pc or monitor?

It's not a problem ....or you could set the screen saver to come on after just a few minutes ...or set the monitor to turn off after a few minutes ...all is under desktop properties (right click a blank area of the desktop / properties / screen saver / power tab....

It amazes me that most of the old busines pc's still work after all the time they have on them, p2"s p3"s still running, monitors with burnt in images, but still work, i think this has to do with never being shut down, most was only shut down when the power went off. But i dont believe there is any real proof that it was because of not powering off and on. ed

Seems like it's becoming more of a mystery to me.

I guess it all depends on how long you will be away. Anything over 5-10 minutes and I turn mine off and unplug the AC power cord from the wall.

Too many years in cyclone (hurricane) country for me to risk my laptop $$$ investment.

    That's why I have a UPS. I don't trust the raw electricity.

As for biz pcs running 24/7, i think it makes admins' lives easier in that they can log on & maintain the pcs remotely.

Back on topic, yep, it's ok. I do that. I used to set up screensaver to come on every 5 mins, but I got tired of waking it up cuz I was taking time to read the screen.
