If I were a geek, this would be hell

:banghead Recently at the insistence of Firefox I 'upgraded' the browser from 3.5 to 5. For the first few days surfing speed was faster; but then things slowed even for a dial-up, which is what I have. It was like going from watching a cheetah to watching a panda, an animal I have always thought is from a different universe with slower time. My isp, who says everything is fine even when there is an outage, has admitted to having problems with their local phone line providers. Could this be the cause? Could it be my local phone company, ie, Charter? Could it be the switch in browser versions? A hex? Any help much needed. In terms this non-geek can grasp. Thanks!

Well, test your connection with speedtest.net first, 45Kbps is a good speed for dial-up. I'd dump FF 5 as I've had issues with it too and on a fast cable connection. I'm currently testing Google's Chrome to see how I like it after 5 years of FF. Others like PaleMoon, which is an FF clone, gonna check that out too along with my first love of Maxthon for IE which I used before FF for several years.

    auggiedoggie,
my speed is 33.6, not 45, which no one I know has ever gotten on a dial-up around here. When I first got ff5 it went fast, but after 3 days it got really slow. Could problems with the phone lines cause the modem to slow down, for example if noise in lines[a windy sound is in my phone line] could that cause the modem to slow? I went to the net speed site but the download it said would take an hour, with my current time that translates to I could die first. Is there a diagnostic tool on this site? To find my time I just click on the monitors icon on my taskbar. It always says 33.6. Is that then, not to be trusted?Sorry, I'm an innocent babe in the woods.

Not sure what you mean by that but speedtest.net is an objective 3rd party tester which you can trust at the time it was taken. Your modem itself might be 33.6 now for some reason, it should say 56, the 45 would have been from speedtest as a realistic number. Any yellow ticks in your device manager? Hit Start>rght click my computer>properties

BTW, it's bad form to keep starting new threads on the same issue.;)

    Thanks, Auggiedog, for your input.
Yes, I have been guilty of bad form. I am sorry. To explain, not excuse, I have had a continuous headache for days, and health problems I wanted to research but couldn't because of the slow speeds. It is now verified by you and gman what I suspected, that it is the phone lines. The phone co. is being its usual self, and I have made a complaint to FCC, who took the complaint. Thanks to all who helped.

Back, when I was on dialup at 56K speeds 15 years ago, on a download, I'd get 5K/s. If I was lucky. :(

Thanks for that, Auggiedog. Am on mend. I had an actual swollen eyeball. Now I know what I'd look like with bigger eyes!

I love Firefox but for some reason version 5 crashed on me twice.
So sadly, even though I'll go back for some later version, I switched to Chrome.

(...and now I feel dirty. I've abandoned a sick friend)

Quantum, I hear you. That's how I feel about the rare companies that have given good service at reasonable costs over the long haul. I work with them almost daily. They seem to be a fading breed. I have had a small national isp for years with all American support free. It has been good till a couple months ago. Have tried to work with them, but if they don't soon get the act together, urgentcies in my life will force a move elsewhere.
I dislike the way firefox scared me into getting ff5, when I was happy with ff3.5. I will look into Chrome.
