Im a techie myself and dont get stumped often. I had XP home with sp1 and all the updates and had a linksys 802.11b wireless system in place and had a decent internet connection. i switched to xp pro without sp1 and didnt have a problem. i installed service pack one for xp pro and i couldnt get any internet, my wireless connection wasnt there and my system didnt detect me moving the wireless to different usb's. Well i thought i had to be the fact that my linksys was old and xp pro was to advanced. i installed a microsoft wireless g in my room and it is much faster so the first thing i did was install service pack one. when my computer restarted same problem no detection of usb movement wireless connection gone. i have a dell 4550 with a 1.8p4 768ram 400megfsb my usb ports are not highspeed usb's so i dont know if that means they are not 2.0 and they are 1.1 but the system is not that old. idont really wanna put a high speed usb card in and have to remove sp1 for another time. any ideas????

i metioned the usb's because it is the only thing that i can think of even though it doesnt make since, since sp1 for home and pro are so similar

is the adapter just blinking? do you have WEP enabled?

I had a similar problem with my wife's laptop and setting the channel to 1 (for whatever reason) seemed to fix it. Also, make sure you have the latest firmware for the router.

No when the computer restarted the lights were off, it's like the usb's wouldnt read, of course i just realized that i never tested any other usb device's to see if it was hardware specific but it didnt read either adapters movement,i pulled out the old linksys router and put in the new microsoft g and its firmware is up to date

Check Device Manager, are all the Universal Serial Bus Controllers functional (or even listed).

I'd also check for an update of the system's chipset or USB drivers.

What does ipconfig tell you? What happens if you ping 127.0.0.1?

No, no. Not the BIOS. The drivers. These.

And what does ipconfig /all say (you might have an on-board network card that also has an IP).

OK, so you have an IP address. I was kinda hoping you'd post the output from ipconfig, but OK. Can you ping the router (your gateway)? Can you ping www.google.com? Can you ping 64.233.161.99?

Ok. You have an IP address. You were able to ping 64.233.161.99 (that's one of google's servers). You're on the internet.

    What does "nslookup www.google.com" do?

And if you try someplace you've never been? Like, say, http://www.beltie.org/?

Is it just IE, or do other programs not access the Internet, too?

there are no lights on the wireless the usb's dont detect the device the wireless connection is not there anymore there is no ip configuration but it all comes back automatically when i remove sp1

But the thing is that you're ON the Internet for most intents and purposes. You can send and receive packets from servers on the Internet (TCP/IP is fully functional), it looks like DNS is working (but it might just be caching -- try an nslookup on some hostname you've ever been to). That suggests to me that it's not an OS (Windows) problem or a hardware problem, but an application problem.

So the question is, do other applications work?
