I did a backup and a reformat recently for a computer that was so severely infected I removed thousands of viruses from but it rendered it unbootable as many main system files were not cleanable. Is there a procedure for restoring windows system files in a scenario like that?

    Hi

Could do a dirty/repair install of Windows, as in over the top of itself, thus doesnt remove any installed apps, updates, settinsg etc

    Like this or XP http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

But if too badly damaged best option sit to see is you can recover any needed files (docs, images etc) then clean install.
