I only say this as I have tried other forums

OK - I have a DVD ROM drive (D:), and a DVD/RW drive (E:). Some time back, my D drive stopped recognising music CDs and CD ROMS when put in the drive. It does however recognise DVDs.

Therefore, I have to use my E drive to play music or open files on CD ROMS which prevents me from recording on the fly.

When I insert a CD into the D drive, it just gives a 'no disc inserted' message, and the disc spins periodically as autorun kicks in.

I have downloaded the latest drivers for the ROM, but still no joy.

Any geniuses out there know how to fix it?

Many, many thanks in advance. :)

It would seem to be device or driver related. Have you tried deleting the device from device manager and letting Windows find it upon next boot and install default Windows drivers for it?

    Nope, not tried that yet.

Are you sure it won't cock my system up?

    Cheers

    Ok, thanks.

I have gone through start/settings/system/hardware/device manager

Do I disable the device, or uninstall it please?

    Many thanks.

Uninstall then reboot, wait for it to refind it and install drivers ...it will prompt you as to the action taken.

Just my opinion, this isn't likely a software problem. I bet the lens is dirty. Happens to me ALLLLL the time. From my experience, this is far more likely than the software buggering up, or connections coming loose, believe it or not. Re-installing is easy and won't do any harm, but, if you find that you still have a problem afterwards, I would suggest you invest in a good cleaning disc. If the lens is so dirty that it won't even play that, I have managed to make it work by opening up the drive, and gently cleaning the lens with a q-tip. Just note that doing this will void any warranty on the drive. However, at this point, most warranties have expired anyway.

Mada_Milty gives sound advice. If you have a cigarette smoker in the house, your poor old DVD Lazing-LED can fail prematurely. Since the electronics auto-compensates for normal old age dimming of the LED by boosting the current through the LED, any dirt will likely kill the poor thing.

Sounds like good advice, but if the lens is dirty, how come it can read DVD's but not CD's or ROMs??

    It just doesn't make sense!!

    I'll try both anyway.

    Thanks.

Looks like this could be the case then Mada. I have a disc cleaner, and that won't run.
I cannot see what I am supposed to be cleaning with a cotton bud, so do I have to remove the drive with the drawer open, and have a prod around in that?

    Many thanks.

Heh, if you are CERTAIN that you want to do this (remember what I said about warranties!), then you will have to remove the drive from the comptuer, and actually disassemble the casing. The lens is a small piece of glass in the centre of the disc tray, and is very hard to miss. Sadly, you won't be able to get at it through the front door!

Hey there, my dvd-rw did the same thing until I updated the firmware, not a problem since. You should be able to get the firmware(not drivers) from the manufactures website.

    Separate lens'/lasers?

    Cheers for that.

I went to Lite On's website, and could find no listing for the DVD ROM. My device manager says it is a 'jlms xj-hd165h'. When I do a google search for that device, I am 100% positive it is a lite on product.

But I can't find firmware for that model (or even that model listed!).

    Do you have a link??

    Thanks.

Actually you don't have to disassemble the drive to clean the lense, there are LOTS of lense cleaners out there that use brushes, towelettes, you name it. I'm not saying they work well, but they are the next to last alternative, the last alternative being disassembly. ;P

Disassembly is the last resort when the cleaning disc will not play, as my post says. The OP has already mentioned that the disc won't play.

Cheers mate, but I have decided now to just get a new DVD ROM. Maybe mine has just died, and they're so cheap now that you can't go wrong! I have used new firmware etc, and drivers, but nothing improves it in any way. It's getting on a bit too now, and at least I'll have a warranty on the new one. :)

Thanks all for your help :)
