illegal windows installed

My friend took her computer to a shop where they installed an illegal copy of windows. Does anyone know the best way for her to legalize her copy? She didn't do anything wrong, it was the shop that did it.

So the computer had no installation of XP before she took it to the shop?

I would suggest contacting Microsoft via phone and telling them about her situation and maybe if you report to them the company that illegally installed the software she might get a free key.

Yea it was common practice for most Retailer repair shops to repair problem OS by installing a new one from there license, and not registering this with MS, and in the past they got away with this, but with MS's new policy, it is there customers that can pay the price. My suggestion would be to take it back to the shop were she had it "repaired" and complain, and tell them that if they do not rectify the problem that she will contact MS

If your friend owns XP & has a proper key you might be able to use a Key changer utility to replace the invalid key with her legit one.
