I'm about to get rid of the pc if I can't fix it!

We have a Soni Vaio that has never run right. I recently purchased PC Tuneup from AVG. It shows there are 280 programs running at boot up. The problem is they don't tell me what to do about it. When I go in and look at all the programs there is no way to tell what is what. It is so slow at boot up I'm sure that is at least one of the problems.

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

Not used that app to look into startups as it maybe listing Services as well as application startups, so run the below small guide and attach the log as requested as we can see what can be deleted from your startup list.

Run Ccleaner and click Tools > Startup and then click the Save to text file buttom at the bottom, Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

I may know how to do it.

Press start then run and type msconfig then go to the top tab last one which will say startup then untick all of the programs you dont want to run at bootup.

Don't say thanks press thanks.

Using msconfig to control startup programs is not recommended. Instead we suggest either: Startup Control Panel, WinPatrol or CCleaner.

But do not disable anything until someone looks over your list and tells you what you can safely disable.

That is what a lot of people do.
If they don't know what something is, they click to stop it running.
Have seen too many times where a vital System service was stopped just because the person had not seen it before.
Very hazardous way of doing something.
