Well, It's been awhile and I think I'm finally ready to build a new machine. I built the computer I'm on now with a friend of mine a few years back and it's finally starting to die. I've always wondered if the machine I'm currently using was EVER good??, check out my current computer specs here.

Anyhoo, My new machine has to be powerful. I am a senior in college and hoping to one day become a film editor. So I need a machine that can both render and display video as fast as possible. My budget is under $1500 (without a monitor) I've been out of the computer loop for so long I'm not even sure what's "good" anymore. I hear very good things about intel Core i7...

I quickly put together a list of what I thought could be a decent machine (still need to find ram). I am posting in this forum today to see what you would suggest I build for under $1500 to meet my multimedia needs.

Here is a list of some of the parts I think could work well: New Computer Parts List

All replys greatly appreciated, I'd like to hear what you guys have to say!

    Thanks :cool

The Core i7's are not worth the money right now. All components that are compatible with the i7 tech are very new and expensive, not to mention the overpriced DDR3 RAM.
You also said that you hope to "one day" become a film editor. Do you really need ultra power now, or in the future? If not now, buy a scalable system that fits your current budget and upgrade when "one day" comes along.
If you need a beefy CPU go for something like the Intel Q9550. It has a very good FSB, and a large cache which will make encoding and such a cakewalk.
Also a word on video cards. Different brands often make stuff all difference. Oftentimes the difference with video cards is a 10% power gap between models, which often means that one may be 8 frames faster, or have 10,000 more colors, all of which mean nothing to the human eye. ATi or nVidia? Who cares! Both their latest cards will do what you want and more.
For video editing and encoding you'll need some serious hard drive space too.

Thanks for all the responses thus far.

I like to build computers that will last me, that's why by saving up $1500 I want to make the best possible machine I can for the money. While the i7 may be overpriced isn't that what the market is going towards? How does my list look so far, is everything compatible with one another? and basically, if you had $1500 to spend - what would you buy?

    Thanks
