Hello! Well most of you don't know me all that well, but I'm starting to make closer friends here which is good. For a number of years, I have struggled with weight issues, and most of it stems from my previously being a football player and eating what I wanted and the pounds drifted away. Well, I'm 37 years old, not playing football, and well, basically I used to be sedentary.

About a month ago, I started really looking at my life, namely my weight issues and decided that I have been farting around too much.(both literally and figuratively lol) I have tried losing weight in the past with fad diets and half committed to exercise programs, only to fail miserably. Well, now that's all changing.

When I looked at my young kids who are extremely active, I thought "It's a shame that I am only 37 and I cannot even keep up with my own kids." Now, I'm not obese in the sense of needing to have my front door removed to get outside for the first time in 7 years, but I am about 40-50 pounds overweight and I'm sick of this crap! I have made up my mind to tackle this beast once and for all.

If you care to follow, I have my own blog about this, and other things I might mention, but I am not selling anything so I don't think that is a violation of the rules I hope. Anyway, been doing this for now about to complete my second full week and already i am noticing results.

check it out if you care and feel free to comment there.

    It certainly is doable.
Last year (2009) in Jan., I weighed 185 lbs.
3 months later, in April, I was down to 140 lbs.
Mystery is where did it go.
I was eating the same foods in the same amounts. Doing the same amount of work.
Not a thing had been changed. No diets or exercises. No pills. Nothing changed except for having to buy smaller clothes.
Went from a 35 in. waist to a 30 in.
Worried me at first, not understanding what had happened, but doesn't seem to have hurt me too much.
Little shortness of breath is about all.

Best of luck to you MOTC!

You seem like a rather determined and focused young man, keep that focus and I don't think you'll have any problems.

Then when you break 50, then 55, that desicion about whether to where your belt above OR below the belly is a daily issue.

    :-D:-D:-D

I remember my father-in-law telling me just that somewhere back in the '70's. I had no idea what he was talking about, but I get now. :major

@motc Sounds like you are sticking with a realistic goal which I would think would be the most important thing. Good luck to you! :)

@hrlow Have you seen a doctor since your weight loss? If you haven't, you should really do so. Unexpected weight loss can be a sign of many things.

I think the most important thing with regard to training and weight loss is visualisation

So I would recommend you get a good MP3 player and fill it with all the tunes that get you going, what I mean by that is listen to the music and imagine yourself in a rocky movie or similar training your *** off and imagine what you'll look like after the diet and how people will react to the thin you, imagine girls finding you attractive and guys commenting on how amazing you look all while your listening to music.

When you first hear this it may sound silly but its amazing, after a while the hunger or the pain of training gives you a euphoria because you know your working hard and the adrenaline from visualisation will control hunger pangs.

All top athletes use visualisation to help them train,I started lifting weights and exercising when I was about 13 constantly up until I was about 20 and the most important thing that kept me motivated was listening to music and visualising the reasons I was putting myself through it,I was always really into basketball and was captain of my school team so the obviously most of the visualising I did contain me playing in the NBA and dunking on people with a Guns 'n' Roses backing track:-D

MA had a thread here about weight loss and his success started with eliminating junk food and pop and lost 30 IIRC without doing anything else. Time for some weight training there MA.;)

@ hrlow I'll ditto Laura's advice, especially since you're short of breath. :)

MOTC, if you log everything you eat, you find ways then to reduce calories. Reduce calories intake or step up exercise (or both) and you lose weight.

I have lost about 30 pounds and I have lost 9 inches in my waist since Mid-November. Somethings that helped me include elimination of carbinated beverage (coke and such even diet is gone), moderation of the fruit juice. Addition of more protein to my diet.

    Best of success.

You go for it and don't give up.
At the beginning you have lots of enthusiasm to keep you working at it but as time passes that wanes and you need to find new ways to motivate yourself.
I wish you the best of luck.

From being 21 i was always around 150pounds and until i had my accident that never changed more than +/- 5 pounds but in the last few years i have gone up to 195 and developed a gut, my waist went from 30 to 38 but i am not able to do anything about it now so i will just have to stay a roly poly.

    hey good luck man!!

Suggestion from me is to live on protein shakes, lean meats ie. chicken or fish and eat lots of veggies :) Exercise is also a definite. You wouldn't want to just lose alot of weight fast but rather tone as you lose.

Best of luck with your endeavor.

Making vegetable and fruit smoothies made with no fat yoghurt or water should help with the weight loss. Or make a mix of both. Add some protein powder in it as well.

Make it with fresh or frozen fruit and/or vegetables. Don't add sugar. If you wish to make them sweeter, add Stevia extract to it.

Have one for breakfast or snack. Delicious and virtually no calories. Google "smoothie recipes" and you'll find tons of low calories ones.

It's great what you are doing for yourself as well as your family. Just curious, Are you still having the congestive feeling you had this morning? If not it was most probably the hamburger that you shouldn't have had. It's best to stick with your first choice and yes pay that little extra or find another place that serves salads/healthy foods.
My daughter has finally put herself on a diet as well. She watches what she eats and only eats in small portions. Like you she has stopped all sodas and drinks mostly water. Tea or juices when she tires of water. In a little over a week she went from 210 to 198(as of last Friday) She still gets hungry in between and I suggested the yogurts or a tall glass of cold OJ.The OJ is what I do when I get a midnight snack attack while on the pc.
I wish you well on your journey and will keep watching your blog.

Congrats to you motc! just remember what your goal is and dont give up!!

A fad diet or other programs will work short term but for those who are really serious about getting healthy, it's a lifestyle change. Believe me I've tried tons of those fad diets to lose a lot of weight but gain it right back. :(

My road to weight lost began when I eliminated all products that contained High Fructose Corn Syrup. What a huge step that was and probably one of the best I've made in my life! Then I stepped it up and cut out the junk food (chips, candy, ice cream, etc... how it was so hard to give up my ice cream :cry) then I eliminated all "diet" products. I drink mostly water but if I get bored with water, I'll drink some 100% juice and on rare occasions, some iced tea (but only a little).

I've lost 10 lbs and kept it off so far, (I would have lost more but I went on vacation for a week and we all know diets go out the window when you are on vacation :-D) I plan to incorporate some exercise into my diet eventually I just really haven't had the time.

Hey motc7, good for you, go for it man.... I'm perfectly confident you can reach your goal, from everything I've learnt of you, you have the determination and drive needed for such a task.

And remember, there is no such thing as a "Problem"... only a "Challenge" ;)

A thing to remember when dieting is Vitamins. You need the right amount in the body to keep it healthy. If you aren't taking them I'd suggest you talk with your doc or pharmacist about it. I posted two informational sites you may want to read on it.
Those summer colds can be nastier and more uncomfortable then the winter ones. Hope you get to feeling better.;)

Stay focused. Don't get in too big of a hurry. That can be the worse thing you could do. Take it in moderation.

    Don't eat!! :-D:-D

No, seriously, you may want to do a liquid diet --> body cleansing. Stick to fruit juice and water for three days. Then start back with small frequent meals.

Oh yeah there's a couple of weight loss pills you can get a from a pharmacy now that actually work, they can double the amount of weight you lose naturally.

Over here you don't need a prescription to get them but you have to do a little interview at the pharmacy just to check your not on any medication that will affect them.

May be worth looking into,if you can't find them just ask for some blue diamond shaped pills, they will make you lost weight to but you have to put a little effort in.:-D
