The drive is "maxtor" between 20 - 24 gb, it seems to be a physical problem and im hoping the hard drive is'nt "dead" and please nobody suggest backing up data regularly as it is a fundamental i shall never overlook again!, i had previously burned a back up to a cd-rw but had to re-use it so unfortunately i lost it (data) twice, the drive is around 6 years old, the os on it is windows xp i have currently removed it from my computer to prevent any more data loss and or electronical failure's, the ideal program i am looking for would be able to extract data from within one HDD the faulty one, to another installed on the same pc. I am running windows XP and the interface is IDE.

HDClone is a nice freeware app found on this site that allows you to perform a sector by sector copy of one hard drive to another. Unfortunately, this will overwrite the destination hard drive, leaving you with only the contents of the source HDD.

You might also try setting the old HDD as slave and connecting it. Your machine should detect it, and allow you to copy files from it to the master through explorer.

If it's a head crash ie it clicks, you are all done (I believe data reconstruction runs around 10 grand but could be way off) If the drive is useable at all but not bootable, do what the other person said. hook it up as a slave and you'll be able to browse through it and copy what you need. If you are the adventerous type you might buy a good drive of the exact same model number and type and try switching out the boards, but I have never had sucess with this method. As for backing up, don't worry about it, I scold people about backing up on a regular basis, but I don't do it my self. Other then my music.

Good luck I hope I helped
