Today, I got this Microsoft error page:

    http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=f5c5c3c2-f7cc-477c-9bc7-05828125d367&SID=1476

However, instead of using the F8 key, I used the System Configuration Utility method found on this webpage for Windows XP:

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

After I finished what I needed to do in Safe mode, I followed the instructions "To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in normal mode."

However, after restarting my computer, I got a System Configuration Utility message dialogue box which said:

You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows Starts.

The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Start up mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tabl to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

I'm totally confused. I thought the whole point in going to Safe Mode was to be able to successfully make whatever changes that you need to make. Therefore, I don't understand why I'm getting a message that tells me that I need to undo the changes that I made using the System Configuration Utility. By the way, when I followed the instructions from the symantec.com webpage to go back to Normal Mode using the System Configuration Utility method, my screen and everything no longer looked like it did when I was in Safe Mode, but appeared as it did before I went to Safe Mode.

Did you change anything in your computer system. If you are not sure, trying run at safemode restore your computer at a earlier time before you do something wrong like this.

Be careful reccomending System restore in Safe Mode. Its a one way street--you can't undo what you have done if it goes wrong.

System restore is telling you are in a selective startup--you have something disabled. Its asking you to change the startup type on the general tab, to normal. That way everything starts up on boot.

I'm not sure what the problem is, other than general confusion?

When computer run into windows-> choose start->run ->type msconfig-> OK for running, You will see Sytem configuration utility window at the first General Screen choosing Normal startup->OK and restart your computer again

Okay, so if I follow the above instructions, will what I did while my computer was in Safe Mode be undone? That's what the System Configuration Utility dialogue box says when my computer first starts up. And if so, then what was the purpose of me going into Safe Mode in the first place if what I did in Safe Mode is going to be undone? I'm sorry if that's a dumb question, but that just doesn't make a bit of sense to me.

Right, the last way I think you will repair windows. put microsoft windows xp disk into CD driver, run setup unstill you see an explaination at the button screen " windows is searching for previous version". after it find out and you choose repair, windows will remove the old files, coppying new files, but it still keep all programs that you already got in the old system. after windows install sucessfully you will install some drivers that windows do not fix.
