I don't know if I should post this here, but I had some questions and I'm trying to secure my three computers and network.

I read these articles on another post on this site and it said that I could use free firewall software instead of Windows Firewall. I downloaded ZoneAlarmFree and it's not free. It's asking me for a serial or it will expire in 30 days. What else do you guys recommend that's effective and free?

Then I was wondering what are the advantages if any to use FireFox over Internet Explorer and is there a feature where you completely unistall Explorer?

Mark has certainly given you a comprehensive and well drafted answer.

It might be helpful for you to answer some pertinent questions however.

What are the operating systems on your computers?

What have you done to secure your router?

Do you have wireless in your network?

What specifically are you securing against?

For instance, someone in a remote rural location probably faces his biggest threat over th internet,
Whereas someone in a block of flats in east London probably finds one of his neighbours a bigge threat, over a wireless link.

 

Thanks for all the replies... I'm currently using XP SP2 on all my computers.

I haven't done anything with my router I completely forgot your suppose to create some passwords or something and it's just in default mode I believe.

I don't have a wireless network.

I don't want any intrudcers breaking into my network or getting any of my personal info basically. I'm a web designing and I had some of my sites hacked a few times and I'm not sure how. I also want to protect my computer from most virus and spyware. I always have SpyWare Blaster & SpyBotSD on all my systems.

Ok, I also downloaded Ad-aware and it's running on 1 system just to test how it works and I have the SpywareBlaster and Spybot installed should i remove all of these? Also is there any good info on this site, so I could configure my router it's just a small Linysys router that the cable company sent me.

Another question already... Could I uninstall That Windows Live Installer what is that for? Also could I unistall Windows Live Sign-in assistant?

Then there's a Viewpoint Media Manager do I need that?
