imap error in Windows 8.1

    I am going bonkers over this. I am moving my stuff from XP Pro, old machine, to Windows 8.1, new machine. Since I cannot use Outlook Express on Win 8.1 I need to have a new email client. I have tried Win Live Mail, Thunderbird, and Zimbra with the same results.

    When I try to create a new account on any one of these I get the error message (Zimbra) service.FAILURE: system failure: Unable to connect to IMAP server: DataSource: { id=b95d9271-8ffa-4f2b-90c6-d44e4c3a0c32, type=imap, isEnabled=true, name=Genealogy, host=imap.gmail.com, port=993, connectionType=cleartext, username=mdietzgen@wildblue.net, folderId=1 } or something similar on the other two.

    I have uninstalled the clients, changed security, changed ports, etc., etc., with the same type of failure. I do get a timeout failure with imap port of 465. Another failure message is Cannot connect to "imap.gmail.com:143". Please check host/port and network connectivity.

    The funny thing is I started with Live Mail and had no problem at first. When I went back the next day I got this type of error and have not been able to get it going.

    I still have OE running on the old machine and have checked and rechecked the user name and ports. They are the same on the old and the new machine. I am beginning to think something I installed later that first day has corrupted the Environment Variables on the new machine so that it cannot find the process to handle either the build of the new client account or processing the imap protocol.

    Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    You are using a gmail imap server for a wildblue account.

    One of these things doesn't belong and is incorrect.

    Edit: I guesss wildblue uses gmail.

    Anyway, what are your configuration settings exactly?

    So far you have mentioned an error with IMAP, SMTP, and 143 isn't even a port used by Gmail afaik.

    imap.gmail.com: 993, must use SSL
    smtp.gmail.com: 465, or 587, must use SSL, must use authentication and (if it shows) use the same settings as incoming for authentication.
    user name is full email adddress

    Yes, WildBlue (actually Excede now) uses GMail.

    The 143 was just a stab in the dark.

    Thanks for the reply

    I have tried SSL, I posted the error I got when using a different security.

    My parameters from the old machine are imap.gmail.com, port 993, stmp.gmail.com, port 25, SSL, authentication, user name is mdietzgen@wildblue.net.

    I will try smtp.gmail.com port 465 and 587 to see if that works.

    Thank you for the reply

    using imap.gmail.com stmp.gmail.com port 465 I get the error from Zimbra:
    service.FAILURE: system failure: Unable to connect to IMAP server: DataSource: { id=0de10a77-2f5e-4256-a094-f8303b9284d7, type=imap, isEnabled=true, name=Genealogy, host=imap.gmail.com, port=993, connectionType=ssl, username=mdietzgen@wildblue.net, folderId=1 }

    with port 587:
    service.FAILURE: system failure: Unable to connect to IMAP server: DataSource: { id=09903e1a-e5a7-488a-b936-be1011b8f7d9, type=imap, isEnabled=true, name=Genealogy, host=imap.gmail.com, port=993, connectionType=ssl, username=mdietzgen@wildblue.net, folderId=1 }

    Same type of error. I think the problem is with Windows 8.1 and not the server.

    Other forums said to try telnet to the server but I cannot find that utility on the new machine. Would a ping work?

    You have to change the port that you ping. Also, make sure you don't have a firewall blocking these ports.

    Which server are you changing the ports on? 993 is the only one for imap. 587 is for smtp (outgoing). You have to use SSL (not sure if you disabled it or not).

    Port 25 on your old machine is not SSL. You can try it, if you like.

    I was changing the smtp ports. I have tried SSL. 993 and 25 work fine on the old machine. I checked the firewall, no ports are blocked.

    Thank you again.

    You need to change the imap port. Imap is incoming, smtp is outgoing.

    993 is for incoming only.

    993 is my imap incoming port, 25 is my stmp outgoing port. My comment was about changing the stmp port from 25 to 465 and 587 as you suggested.
