This is what has come up on my computer

Message from SYSTEM to ALERT on 4/18/2006 1:43:47 PM

    STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRS IMMEDIATE ATTTENTION.

Windows has found 55 Critical System Errors

To fix the error please do the following:

    1. Download Registry Update fromwww.fix-ms.com
    2.Install Registry Update
    3.Run Registry Update
    4.Reboot your computer

FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO SYSTEM FAILURE!

So I got to the web site download the update it scans my system finds even more errors but it does not help me. It tells me to register, which of course is not free.
    Is this a scam?
Is there a free download that can help?

    XP?

Turn off Messenger. Go to the control panel/admin tools/ services.

Scroll down to 'messenger'. Right click/properties. Disable it in there.

Don't worry it has nothing to do with windows messenger.

I'd find their email address (header: need to know more about your product, recommended from a friend) and send them something like you just scanned my computer hope you enjoy the most latest encrypted, self-replicating and evolving trojan, SUCKERS! They will as least consider that you maybe your'e telling the truth and hopefully spend hours scanning their system, just like they made you do!

    Definate SCAM!!!

Then they will get his e-mail address and a confirmation that they have reached a valid IP. These should never be responded to in any fashion.

VERY TRUE!! I just hate so called companies like this that try to beguile the unwary into consuming their products and they have caused this individual levels of anxiety and uncertainity based on their falsehoods. It would be nice to uhhmmmmm return the favor.

Heh, so set up a dummy spam account! One that you couldn't care less if it got overrun with messages about love drugs, weight loss, cheap mortgages, or dead foreign diplomats.

Try http://dodgeit.com for a dummy email address. Haven't used it myself, but came across it in a PC mag I read. All the usual warnings apply, like take all care and no responsibility, etc. Bazza

Look in all honesty possibly the best you could do is report it to the authorities. Not sure what part of the world you hail from but I read an article recently about about a "shoddy" security software company offering free online scan that generated a lot of false positives, sucked in naive consumers (no offence to any) but when installed actually made there system MORE VULNERABLE! They are being prosecuted through the US courts.

So although it would be NICE to send a vindictive email it is far more appropiate and may result in greater action if REPORTED through the proper channels.

Hate to say it but I think you actually have an obligation to do this as you found the alert but also ahve all the contact info. This site may be a good start:

Email the host at the very bottom and explain your situations he should deal with it and is a bit of an expert on how to deal with the dodgies.
