Apparently gamers are now being targeted by ransomeware

Keep flash current - a new update came out on Thursday for Win 7 users and below. Win 8 was patched on Tuesday.

NOW is the time to learn how to make system images. Restoring an image takes a lot less time than trying to clean or fix a broken Windows install.

    Good advice all around.

Seems the price is higher than cryptolocker and getting personal files unlocked (jpg pdf mpe wmv). Maybe the perps know that gamers are so into their stats and levels that payment is probable.

I play alot of games but none online. The flash based games I have loose your points when ever you clean your cache and temp file so I start over all the time. Sadly for some, they may consider paying to keep their game on level.

Also makes me wonder what's the next avenue of attack?

Regulars here use any of Acronis, Easeus ToDo, Macrium Reflect, Aomei Backupper or, in my case, Paragon Hard Disk Manager. They all seem to work completely reliably.

A country song put it this way - God is great,,Beer is good,, People are crazy!.

Eldon your link shows a defense as "Crypto Immunizer". I use crypto defense available on MG's. Wonder if both protect in the same way.

They would be relatives who believe Microsoft called them personally and allowed the unknown caller to take remote control of the computer. :-D

They are. The Malware Removal Forum has 347,134 posts. Where did those users 'get' the malware?

Also, these infected CHM files are disguised as fax reports. From the report: "Users weren’t even attempting to access Help files. Instead, the CHM files appeared as if they were an incoming fax report email from a machine in the user’s domain." Nasty!

Imandy Mann, the article has a link to Bitdefender Anti-CryptoWall. Which one did you download from MajorGeeks?

    Grand Gnome #1,

I have used Paragon Drive Backup to make a "Bootable Backup" of my Windows XP installation that included about 2GB of programs and all the settings for Windows, the Onboard Motherboard Drivers, etc., in total, about a 3 hour install. When it came to a re-install, it took just 23 minutes to have a new/fresh installation of Windows with all the goodies.

I used to use Ghost but after a lot of "failed to verify" errors, I switched to Acronis.

I had to restore a backup earlier this month with Acronis. The image was made with 2010. It did not see my backup. Fortunately I have several versions. I tried the 2012 version, it saw the backup and restored the computer (eMachine dual boot XP and 7 both 32 bit). I just restored the Win 7 side of the computer.

I also had to restore a laptop back in 2009. The electric went out while I was doing something (clear day, no storms in the are and unfortunately the battery was so old it didn't hold a charge). I got the dreaded "no operating system". I think this was Win 2K. I restored an Acronis image and used that laptop until the day I e-cycled it.

I've never found Acronis to let me down. I do not run the program in Windows. I load it from a CD or USB stick and make and restore my images that way.

This is the one I'm running. From FooliShIT. Joke of a name for foolish IT. I hardly know it's running until it flags something. It has responded to a couple of programs I use but known to be allright. It caught these programs trying to write to an area of memory it guards. So it is invisible until it makes a catch. There a newer one now on MG's if you do a search for "Crypto Prevent" the newer one is first on the list and this one from 2014 is second.
