I have some avi files that the sound on is not as good as I would like. Is is possible to improve the sound quality or change it to a different formatt.

i think it depends in your player, in your speaker

it doesn't depend on your speaker or something else. it's not possible because if the original sound channel of avi movie was for example 22kHz and 64bit, you can make it 44kHz and 256bit, but it wouldn't affect the quality of the sound.

From the AVI's you currently have any re-recording or change of format can only be made at a maximum quality of the AVI so no you can't improve the sound of your current AVI's.

If there is an original source at a higher quality however (a DVD or whatever) then you could re-record them at a higher quality.
