Improving Vista Performance Score

    Hi,

How do you increase the score for "Desktop performance for Windows Aero?" It seems as if a dedicated graphics card will only improve the "3D business and gaming graphics performance" category.

Interestingly, doubling the RAM from 1GB to 2GB only increased the memory operations per second 4.3 to 4.8. Going from a Dual-Core to a Core 2 Duo increased the calculations per second only 4.5 to 4.9. Going from 5400 RPM to 7200 RPM increased the "Disk data transfer rate" almost a full point.

With all the above improvements, the "Desktop performance for Windows Aero" only improved 3.0 to 3.3.

    Any thoughts?

    James

    Get a better video card.

Although a score of 3.3 is perfectly fine for Aero in Vista. My laptop registers 3.5, and it works fine.

I agree with Adryn, even getting a modest video card like the 7600GT improved my score from 3.5 or so using an N6200TC, which uses your main RAM, to graphics @ 5.9 and gaming @ 5.5.

Also, changing CPU's was obviously a waste of time and money IMO, now if you went from a single to a dual core then you'd see a big improvement, mine went from a 3.7 to a 4.8

    Hi

Does your PC run ok for your real world usage? if so and I would not take much into having a really high WEI score, benchmarks and scores really mean nothing, its how your PC performs for the tasks you need to do on it that count.

My laptops WEI on Aero scores around 3,5 like Adryns and runs great, my desktop has a 8800GTS and has WEI of 5.9, but at a cost.

What I'm really trying to portray is depending on what you use your PC for would determin what hardware you'd need, so if heavy gamer then yes a high WEI on Aero would help, but if occasional gamer and not of the high end games then a Aero WEI of 3.3 is good if your not running a dedicated graphics card.

I didn't actually make these upgrades. I was comparing my ex-laptop to the desktop at my work. I would never upgrade a dual-core to a core 2 duo : )

I was just surprised that the Aero score is so much more stringent than desktop and gaming performance score.

Seems like gaming would require more horsepower than Windows Aero. I mean Windows Aero isn't that spectacular! :D

Adrynalyne, what are the complete specs on your laptop?
