Okay, I'm gonna make this pretty short. First I had a modem hooked up to a switch and then 2 comps hooked up to the switch. This worked for about 1-2years. The switch broke and I went out and got a router, hub, switch. I didn't like having to deal with ports so {x} the router. I still have the hub and switch.

When I connect to the cable modem directly, my ping and bandwth are normal. Whenever more than 1 person is in just the hub or just the switch, I can't even open up a webpage. Yes, I know i'm not supposed to just use a modem and a switch so lets just talk about the hub. I called comcast and they had the balls to tell me it's my networking skills that is wrong and not them "this is after she told me to clean my temp internet files..."

What is wrong?!?! I was screwing with the |local area connection settings| and i see that i got around 2,500 packets sent and only 10 recieved. Maybe this will help? If anyone knows anything about what could be wrong please just reply.

    /parting life as we speek.

Thank you for reading, please reply

    Hi,

Some more information about the new hub and switch might shed some light on the problem. What make/models are they? Also, what is the make/model of the cablemodem?

You say "cable modem directly, my ping and bandwidth are fine", then say "more than one", but don't mention what happens with just one PC connected to either the hub or the switch. Have you tried that? If you have, what were the results?

    Other questions:

Did either or both of them come with Ethernet cables? If so, are you using them? If you are, try the cables that you were using with the original switch. Since you stated that it works when only one PC is connected directly, you know that at least one cable (the one from the cable modem) is good. Make sure that you don't change it when you troubleshoot.

Are you using the correct power transformer on each, that is to say, the one that came in the box with it? Check the labels on them and the power rating label on the switch and hub to be certain.

The reason I ask is because I once had two external US Robotics modems stored in the same box, wanted to use one and I grabbed the newer/faster one and the wrong transformer... they both looked pretty much the same, but the power ratings were slightly different (9 VDC vs. 12 VDC, IIRC) . The modem turned on, and acted like it was working, but it acted "weird". Sometimes it wouldn't reset using AT commands, other times it would but wouldn't dial... I drove me crazy for hours: I was sure that both modems were good when I packed them away. The older modem worked fine with the transformer and the serial cable, and I just assumed that the transformers were the same for both models. When I matched the proper transformer to the newer/faster modem, it worked fine (imagine that :) )

So, try all that, and post a reply to this thread and we'll go from there, OK?

    Regards

    dj

The switch before was an old dss5+ dlink model, the hub now is a network everywhere, and the switch now that i'm getting rid of is the new dss5+ dlink model. Cable modem is a motorola surfboard.

I tested that and I found out that one of the cables is not supported and was raping the bandwidth. No cables or anything came with, but I actually just found out that I downloaded crazy updates from windows that raped my system and screwed everything up. When i went to my friends house to lan, my comp raped his whole connection and everyone had 900 ping. I just formated and everything seems to be okay.

But I really appreciate this post and the help. Thanks alot though for the future posts of help.
