My computer has been infected by both trojans and adware, It looks like our McAfee virus ran out and my spouse didn't renew it. I rarely use the home computer and now I can't at all. It is so bad that I cannot get to the web to download the files in the READ THIS FIRST instructions. I am writing to you from my work computer hoping someone can tell me where to start. I am not a very windows literate person, I've been a UNIX developer for 15 years. I am running windows 98, it takes forever to boot and once it does, all of the memory is used up very quickly(30 seconds). I have McAfee firewall and symantec anti-virus, adaware, adware fighter. I ran the antivirus and it has quarantined 39 dll's but I don't know if I should delete them. The adaware located about 300 threats some critical. but when I left safe mode, the same thing seemed to happed as before. Any suggestions for me? I am trying to run the READ THIS FIRST steps but I run out of memory and have to reboot..ie: I have to create a shortcut to my CD in one boot, then I'm out of memory, then I have to install in another boot, then I'm out of memory...any suggestions are welcome, I'm hoping I don't have to flatten my machine and start over, I've been lax running backups and have a few things I don't want to lose if possible. I'm debating paying geek squad $200 US to fix the problems. Please advise...

How much of the READ ME FIRST have you actually run?
How far behind are you with your Windows updates.
How much memory do you have?
What virus/trojan names have you been finding?

With your problem, skip the online scanners and run at least Ad-Aware SE and Spybot. Then do the following from normal boot mode:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
