In need of some prayers

Got a call tonight from my wife. Long time family friend back in the hospital for bleeding ulcer again. She needed blood so I was going to donate , no problem. Turns out it wasn't an ulcer this time, it was a tumor that had burst in her stomach. She needs a unit of blood but has to pay 200 bucks if I donate which I dont understand, but thats their rules. I guess she gets whatever blood is available at the hospital which is hopefully ok. If she needs more Im donating tomorrow and footing the bill.

I would like to kindly ask for your prayers and thoughts as possible. I have known this woman for 16 or so years, she introduced me to my wife. She is a close friend.

I have nothing else to say, getting a little choked up here.

    Thanks.

Add my prayers to your own BluesMan. And good for you both for volunteering blood and helping with the cost of it.

Obviously they need to deal with the tumor, like right now, but if she's been suffering from ulcers, make SURE she's been tested for H. pylori bacteria, and if not find a competent doctor that will test her and treat it properly. The majority of ulcers are caused by bacteria, not diet, stress, yadda yadda, and are easily CURED with anti-biotics, and a lot of stupid doctors are still treating those with ant-acids, which do nothing but mask the symptons.

    Update... :(

They are doing a catscan to determine where exactly teh tumor is. They are hoping its not near her esophagus because that would mean they would have to detach and reattach it. Either way surgery is tomorrow. Thats all I know for now. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers folks, they mean more than you know.

USD$200 for blood is criminal. In OZ you are not paid for donating blood and not charged for using it. Unfortunately, though, not enough people are blood donors, but being paid, or paying for it, is not the way to go. Best of luck to both of you. Baz

I just got word about the MRI. Turns out the tumor is not in her stomach, its behind it and its HUGE. I looks like its attached to her esophagus and some other things. Pushing on her gall bladder etc. They won't know if its a cancerous tumor or not until they get in there apparently. Either way the surgery is gonna be a major one.

Damn, between this, work, business and home stuff I need a vacation. Im about ready to throw in the towel. Ugh.

Thanks guys and gals. Surgery is at 11am PST today. They have to split here from sternum to navel. They may have to remove her entire stomach according to the surgeon, but no one knows for sure. Its going to be a long invasive procedure. I can only pray for the best...

Which is what we're all doing. Waiting helplessly for someone you care about is tough. But with today's level of medical science, grim isn't as grim as it used to be. It may still turn out well; there's good reason for hope.

Surgery was 5 hours. They had to remove over half of her stomach. The tumor was slightly larger than a football. She's in ICU now and will be for at least a week. Tubes everywhere... This is going to be a long road.

Thanks again for all the support.

Just got bad news about the tumor they removed. They just walked into her room, when no one was around and dumped the news on her. What a way to start the holiday season. I am definately crawling back under my rock now. :(

  35. mispon

    mispon Brigadier Boingy

A shame she was alone. :( At least she's got good people like you there for her afterwards though. What are they going to do now?

The prayers and good thoughts are continued, for you, your friend and her family.

I assume the bad news was cancer, yes? What was the prognosis, or did they just dump the bad news and wander away?

  37. BluesMan

    BluesMan Sgt. Snot Bubble

I gotta go there tonight. tumor was cancerous. I have no idea what prognossis was....wife called me on phone to tell me the little bit of badnews she had. Hopefully know more soon. This holiday season is really starting to take a toll on my already. Bleah...

Some of them will do that. My favorite uncle died on New Years Day many years ago, at age 36, from brain cancer. That was not a joyous season either. But happy endings have happened too, and the tough times make us appreciate the good times all the more.

And this battle isn't over yet either. Still praying for a positive outcome.
