Okay, I'll start from the beginning, and keep in mind that I'm running xp pro.

I was messing around with MANY settings today, and one of those happened to be the boot screen. This involves replacing the file "C:\WINDOWS\System 32\ntoskrnl.exe" file. Now, to do this I had to boot into safe mode to replace it with the start up screen that I wanted. I didn't make the mistake of haphazardly replacing the file though. I made a backup of it that is currently stored on a seperate drive. Once I replace the file with the one I wanted, I restart to get back into the normal windows environment. But when the new boot screen finishes, and the log-in prompt should come up, my computer just restarts.

    Immediately I panic.

I press f8 to boot into safe mode again, and notice that the first file to load is ntoskrnl.exe. Once again, just before the prompt to enter my username and password comes up, my computer reboots. There are no ways that I can load up windows to restore the file I replaced.

What I need to know is how I can go about fixing this. Also, if you need me to elaborate more, just let me know.

(cough) 98 boot disc (cough) :D

might not work on NFTS, I don't know... btw, try booting from the XP cd and repairing system files if a 98 disc doesn't work.

Is there any way to make one of those restore discs in xp?

I don't have a floppy drive, so is it possible to burn a restore cd?

Just try the XP cd then and see if it lets you repair system files or at least into dos.

    Working on it right now.

I may have to go about a different route...I added another partition and I'm installing windows 2000 onto it, and then I'll go in and change everthing around once I can get into windows.

btw, I'm finding your signature pretty humorous right now. ;)

Hi Gott if you still cant get it to work let us know, you should be able to restore the original through the recovery console,as long as you know the directory the back-up is stored in.

But to add to that i use a free program from Stardock to change my bootskin and it works a charm
