Increase audio in mpg

I have a video thats in .mpg format
WMP9 recognizes it as having: audio codec: MatrixMixer, and Video codec: MPEG Video Decoder
The problem is, there is audio, but, its incredibly quiet, I need to adjust the nforce volume control to max, and my stereo to max (its 100watts RMS, connected to my PC via on of those RCA to comp output cables), just to hear it.
I know there must be a way to increase the volume with software; I was thinking a program could just 'normalize' teh volume and save the file to the disk.
I tried virtual dub from this divx digest guide , but it only works for .avi's.
Does anyone know a good app to use for this type of task?

 

Usually the only way is it to use a tool(Like TMPGEnc) to split/de-multiplex the mpeg file into a video- and audio-stream, then use a sound-utility to change the audio-stream, and then join/multiplex the video- and audio-stream again.

 

Once you've got the audio split out to a discrete file, Cool-Edit or any program that can "normalize" it will bring it up to max volume without overshooting that into distortion. Then mix it back in.

 

Agreed. You may want to try compressing it as well if its very dynamic (mostly quiet with a couple of really loud noises) since normalizing just amplifies the highest peak. And you can always "hard limit" with a threshold of -.1 just to be sure there is no distortion after compressing

 

Worked good, I had to use another program to normalize the audio, since Cool edit did a crap job, just gave me static from the mp2 file.
Still, all is well, and recompressed the video with Divx, so, its now half the size to boot
