increase download speed?

is there any way to get a faster download speed? i use dial-up and i always download stuff.... my download speed is only 8kb per second!

 

Not on dial up...8kb hmmm thats fairly good for a DL..I usually run as low as 3.5 kbs when dl'ing large files -- sorry-- save your pennies and go for cable (oohh fast) or DSL(kinda fast)

Transfer rates for data - music or an executable file varies greatly depending upon the site or mirror and the file size(bigger file=slower). Many schools have there own router-hub-mainframe and they are responsible for there own speeds..As stated earlier thats all she wrote for dial up.

Also, satellite is another option (just don't play onling games, unless you don't care about 1 second pings).

Yet another item to note: Most schools or universities may have a bandwith cap on the network. This is all possible on the server side.

8kbs on a modem is great! Is this ISDN by the way?

 

You could use a download manager/accelerator program. I use Free Download Manager.

 

I used to game on dialup years ago. And I remember finding some tweaks that did help. Dialup is not real fast obviously, but a few tweaks I found really helped. I`d do a google for 56k tweaks, and see what ya can come up with.

 

Well when i use to have dial-up i used a program called Download Accelerator Plus.

Definitely depends on the school. At my son's college, his roommate recently downloaded an 850 mb movie in a minute forty one seconds.

 

It's impossible to get more than 7 KB/s on a 56 Kbps modem if that's what you mean.

I still think the dude should test his rwin values and get that part covered 1st. Then add the d/l accel progs after. *shrugs*

 

Whatever he or she does, if it's a 56 kbps modem, the best download speed possible is 7 KB/s.

Do a google search for 56k tweaks. This is the 1st place to start imho.

7 k? Dang. You`d think in this day and age a tad more could be squeezed out of a 56k.

 

You have to remember that a 56 Kbps modem is rated in KiloBits and not KiloBytes.

There are 8 bits to a byte, which is why the maximum download possible is 7. (7x8=56)

 

Then, when you take TCP/IP overhead into account, you realize that 7kb/s is a pipe dream, too.

 

Agree, which in reality, normally 4 Kb/s is what you get on average.

 

Even on the MG link, Download Accelerator Plus is advertised as ADWARE.
Look carefully and you will see that.
I got rid of DAP+ after finding 130 instances of Adware on my PC.
I now use Leechget (also available free from MG, sorry I don't have the link), with no troubles, good speeds, no adware, and re-start if download fails (as most do).
