    Howdy!

So my question is pretty much straight forward. With user login password hacking software like Konboot and Windows Offline NT password changer, is there any type of defense for this?

It's a good question.... and I'd say "yes", but to a point. You can password protect any folders and/or files and/or program you want using something like WinGuard, or Security Toolkit, or Prevent, Protect Me, or take a stroll thru the Security downloads section here at Major Geeks. However, I have to tell you that I have never personally used any of the apps that I just listed, so I can't vouch for their individual effectiveness (or lack there-of). They're all free, and all have ratings of at least 4 (with 5 being the best). It's like I always say to clients: if someone is motivated enough, and smart enough, they can probably get thru just about layers of protection that are in their way. However, we can make it as difficult as possible to deter all but the smartest and most motivated (or should I say "sneaky, underhanded, and misdirected"?).

I hope this helps! Let us know what you chose and why... if it's not something I just listed, or even if it's not something you downloaded from MajorGeeks, let us know 'cuz I think that a few people would like to know about this topic (myself included ;) ).

I'm actually just sitting here bored thinking of scenarios where its a "What if?" thing but I do agree with you fully that if someone is smart and motivated enough, they will get through no matter what. The scenario that brought this up though was in the case of maybe...I dunno espionage or something, haha.

The bad hacker guy that you think is a "friend" (or maybe is forced to do this?) doesn't want to install a trojan on your computer via online because like him, you are a hacking/nerd/computer genius too so you'd be able to spot this a mile away. The bad guy in this case also doesn't want to take your computer because of a variety of reasons (the drive is encrypted and doesn't want to attempt to crack it, or can't crack it for that matter...Lo-jack? XD) and the only option left is to physically be there to install something that will steal whatever information he is looking for. Only thing to do is to crack the password while you are away on the toilet or something.

Assuming that you either don't have the drive encrypted or that you don't have any encrypted folders/files to protect, how would defend from this foe from using a simple password bypassing system?

TrueCrypt is a free encryption program that can encrypt the entire system drive, requiring a password before Windows even loads. Without the password, the data on the disk stays encrypted and the only way to use the disk is to reformat it.
