Is it advisable to stop indexing on an Asus notebook U80 using Windows 7? Does it take up excessive space? If I should wnt to stop it, what are the steps I would take?

    Greetings, texasharper.

The indexing service doesn't take up a lot of space, but it can consume a lot of CPU cycles, especially if you've got a lot of files on your machine.

To trim the service, click Start, enter 'Indexing' in the Search field, and select 'Indexing Options'. You can then modify the folders that the service searches for.

To stop the service, click Start, enter 'Services.msc', select 'Windows Search', and stop the service.

To disable the service completely, in 'Services.msc', double-click 'Windows Search'. In the 'General' tab 'Startup type' drop-down list, select 'Disabled'. The service should then be disabled upon reboot.

    Hi TexasH

I agree with Caliban on indexing and while I would say that I've not disabled it on any PC apart from my main desktop and reason for that is it runs SSD (solid state drive) in instead of the normal HDD (Hard Disk Drive) as SSDs do not need indexing, I would say that your PC is quick enough to not disable indexing unless you are seeing a noticable slowdown in performance,

The performance issue may actually not be indexing but another culprit, as indexing generally only starts its task when your PC is idle, info on indexing service HERE

EDIT: as I fired up a different PC with Windows 7 on and indexing enabled and goto this location (may need to get past a UAC message for access to the folder, so be in the Admin account logon) and navigate to here C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data and right click the data folder and it should tell you what space indexing is using, you can rebuild the data base, which deletes old entries and adds a new index.

One question to ask yourself is do you search for files alot on your PC with Search or the Start Search box? if not then the indexing service may just be something you can do without.
