Inexplicable program corruption

I'm experiencing odd behavior from a new build PC (WinXP SP3, about 3 weeks old).

Seemingly at random, when I boot the machine, Nod32 anti-virus real time protection does not start; if I then restart the machine, real time protection starts ok.

I'm also finding that programs are getting corrupted for no obvious reason - when I start them they simply hang, or if they do start, won't allow saving. In the case of Photoshop, I can resolve the issue by copying a saved version of photoshop.exe back over the top of the existing file in the appropriate folder, and restarting, which would appear to suggest that it's the launch file that is being corrupted on program start.

    - I've done a full scan using Nod32 and no threats were detected.

    - I've worked through the malware removal guide and the logs are clean (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1740083#poststop).

    - I've run a full error scan using HD Tune and there are no reported bad sectors.

    - I've run memtest for 27 hours, 40 tests, 0 errors.

    Where should I look next?

Nod32 anti-virus i think sucks need to find some thing eles it may lie with in that problem.

I see lots of complaints about Nod32 anti-virus where it might have compatibility issues.

Now Did all of these issues Start When Nod32 anti-virus was installed:confused

Try uninstalling Nod32, then running CHKDSK /F- STAYING OFF-LINE WHILE YOU DO.
Also, with your dvd for W7 in the dvd drive, run sfc /scannow so that windows can replace any faulty protected files.
Then try another antivirus suite, unless you are happy to re-install Nod32.

Nod32 was the first thing I installed, followed by everything else, and the machine has been running fine for a few weeks, so if it is Nod32, it didn't start causing issues immediately.

I'm also running another almost identical machine (winxp, same mobo, same ram, same hdd, same cpu) with the same software setup and it works ok.

It's WindowsXP, so presumably that command wouldn't work?

I'm happy to switch to a different AV, but Nod32 has been fine up until now and works flawlessly on an identical machine :confused

This is a good idea, I'll get on it.

SFC /SCANNOW WORKS ON ALL WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS- You just need to keep clicking retry until it finishes- in Windows 7 you should right click and run as administrator (I think Vista was the same-have not used Vista for a while now)

I understand you liking your antivirus program, but even AVG had problems a year or so ago- uninstalling and re-installing it will ensure it has not become corrupted.

Absolutely, that's exactly what I'm going to do :)

What I was pondering is whether to try to persevere with Nod32 and reinstall it after chkdsk, or to go to a different AV program.

I would Recommend Some thing like AVG internet Security worth the money haven't had a virus in a few years and i would all so get malwarebytes as your third firewall.

    AVG internet Security

    malwarebytes
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5756

If your looking for Security i would use these.

And then for All in one tools i would use these
    Advance System Care 5

    And
    Smart Defrag
    http://majorgeeks.com/IObit_SmartDefrag_d5318.html

This is what i use to keep clean and rarely have an issue with virus or malware.

As unlikely as it sounds, the problem appears to have been Dropbox.

Before I had gotten to chkdsk and reinstalling Nod32, I first uninstalled Dropbox and removed it from startup. The PC has been fine ever since. I've run it for a few weeks thinking that it must be a coincidence, but as far as I can tell, Dropbox really was the culprit - in some way interfering with Nod32 and causing corruption.

    Weird. :confused
