    It started while browsing online. Suddenly my computer locked up and 30 seconds later McAfee antivirus went nuts, blocking trojans a.exe, b.exe, c.exe, etc etc. I ran McAfee antivirus, avast! (downloaded after infection) and Lavasoft's Adaware in regular and safe mode (user account) and those programs found a few bugs (Win32: Rootkit-gen [Rtk], js: pdfka-gw expl, html: agent-n trj, a0120321.exe win32: rootkit, a12392.exe win32: trojan-gen, bearinst.exe win32: trojan-gen). I can't enter the Administrator account in safe mode, as it locks up while "loading your personal settings".

    I followed the Windows XP Cleaning Procedures as well as I could. However because I'm locked out of administrator, when I tried to change msconfig, I received the error "Access denied error was returned while attempting to change service. Need to log on using administrator account to make specific changes."

    The initial run of anti-malware found 4 infected files. Second run was clean and the other programs found nothing. The entire time the computer was unplugged from the internet, when I plugged the the modem back in to go to this site, within minutes Trend Micro's RUbotted reported 4-5 bots. And a few minutes later McAfee popped up removing combofix.exe as it was infected, showing this "Artemis!605D4836ADFBcombofix.exe".

    Here are the logs. Couldn't find the SASlog.txt, but as mentioned, scan was negative. Thanks for any help.

    You are running two AV programs:
    avast! antivirus
    McAfee VirusScan

    Choose one and uninstall the other!

    I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove everything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and definitely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    naecd

    File::
    c:\docume~1\MIECZY~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\naecd.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\temp1600
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\temp1601

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I took combofix.exe that McAfee quarantined claiming it had a trojan and recovered it as it was the one I ran during the Read & Run. When I initiated the script, I received this pop-up from combofix: Current date is ~. Combofix has expired. Click 'yes' to run in REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY mode. Click 'no' to exit.

    I'm still not able to log into administrator mode either in safe or regular windows. Aside from that, I honestly can't say if anythings changed as the worst was the first couple days prior to finding the initial bugs. Once those were removed, windows acted normal. Thanks for everything so far.

    Forgot to mention (can't edit). Except for this website, the computer wasn't connected to the internet much. And most of the time it was in use, it was running malware detection/removal programs.

    I will get to your logs in a while. But in the meantime, you need to delete Combo from your desktop and then redownload it.

    Then:
    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    I deleted Combofix, but everytime I tried to download the program, McAfee would pop up at 99% and say it was infected with Artemis! (this part would be random numbers and characters) and quarantined it. Fortunately I had a extra copy on C:\ which I moved to the desktop. I ran the script (no reduced functionality this time), and a couple of minutes after it finished McAfee quarantined combofix with another Artemis!. This is the message I get when I try to log into adminisrator from regular windows "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction".

    You need to get me the log from McAfee so i can see what it is reporting. And in the meantime I suggest you remove this:
    C:\WINDOWS\XChange.dat

    Xchange was removed. I believe this is the log you want.

    These are all false positives. And it is also a reminder as to why we ask you to totally disable all av and as programs before you run the tools. What malware issues are you having besides McAfee not liking ComboFix?

    McAfee was disabled when ComboFix ran. It was quarantined after everything was finished and not being used. Aside from being locked out of administrator, which was not a problem before the infection, I have no obvious issues.

    I'm not seeing a malware cause for the admin problem.....I suggest you post in the software forum.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
