    PLEASE READ THIS!!!

I was watching the news this morning, and heard that over 7.4million (yes, over 7 MILLION) digital picture frames were sold thru WalMart, BestBuy, and Amazon with VIRUSES embedded in them. The virus is a form of W32.Sality.AE, it effects the autorun function of Windows, and was first detected in April of 2008. This means that if you have updated anti-virus software, you should be OK. The virus is designed to steal passwords and log keystrokes. There were 4 different sizes infected, and 4 different manufacturers: Samsung 8.5in, Insignia 10.4in, Mercury 1.5in keychain frame, and a 9in Insignia model. The Samsung infection came from an infected PC that was used to create the firmware for the frame and the malware jumped in to the Samsung drivers too. Here's a link to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/01/02/BUV9150IH8.DTL

(I wasn't sure if this should go to the malware forum, the hardware forum, the web links forum, or here in the software forum; I figured more people would see it here in software; I will submit it for a front page news article too)

Wow. That's one of the scarier things I've seen as far as malware goes.

I just bought 2 picture frames online on the 31st and they are being shipped now. Since they are plug and play shouldn't (hopefully) the virus software picks up the intrusion and clean the virus and that will be that.

From what I read, updated AV software will stop the virus, but I don't think it will actually remove it. I don't have time now, but if you Google "Infected Digital Picture Frames" you can find more specific information about the exact model numbers and manufacturers and retail outlets. If you have an infected model, I would strongly recommend that it be returned for a different unit; your retailer should have no problem with this.

I knew there was a good reason why I avoid these things. This isn't the first time this has happened.
