    Hi there, windows Xp user here.
    A few days ago my laptop got hit with malware in the form of Spyware Protection. It prevented me from using any programs and killed task manager. I rebooted, but I kept getting a BSOD stop error before getting to the logon screen. Through research I found out that my winlogon.exe and explorer.exe were deleted. I ended up restoring both files through the recovery console. After running scans through my AV, MBAM, Spybot, DrWebCureit and Ad-aware, I picked up and quarantined a plethora of malware. All seemed well for about a day then I got hit with Win32 Host process errors and 'open with' dialogues whenever I tried to run an .exe file. I went through the RUN/README procedure outlined in these forums and the Win32 error seems to be gone, however MBAM and SAS were unable to run without renaming them and still don't run under their normal names. Also I seem to be stuck with the windows classic theme. Anyways that's as much detail I can remember for now. Hopefully the logs help. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

    Java(TM) 6 Update 21 <--- Uninstall outdated Java.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    RegLock::
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2581610734-1340675633-1247259385-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved\{AD31EF7A-187B-5B7C-0AAA-6520BD80F040}*]
    @Allowed: (Read) (RestrictedCode)
    @Allowed: (Read) (RestrictedCode)

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\61af0b5oy074ma2d330
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\61af0b5oy074ma2d330
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Templates\61af0b5oy074ma2d330

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Reboot
    your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Hi there, thanks for the quick reply!

    I can't find Java in the add/remove programs list, but the Java icon is still in the control panel and still working. I remember trying to uninstall it a long time ago with no success. Then running JavaRa on it, also with no success because it said I had the most up to date version. The Java folders are still in my /Program Files as well. How should I go about removing them? Should I still proceed with combofix?

    To uninstall Java see the below:

    Try Revo Uninstaller.
    Choose the option on the bottom of the list (#4). Be very careful while deleting the bolded registry items ONLY!! This software will create a system restore point for you as well prior to uninstalling a software program.

    Then yes... continue on with the rest of the instructions. :)

    Hey there. Revo worked to get rid of Java, thanks! After following your procedures, the Generic Host Process Win32 error that used to come up when booting no longer shows, thankfully. However I did run into a few more things of note along the way.

    After uninstalling Java, I began with the combofix step. I closed my anti-virus(Comodo) and even terminated its associated processess in task manager but combofix always says that it is still running. I went ahead and followed the procedure and it seemed to go smoothly. Combofix rebooted the computer on its own, but that also started Comodo firewall up as well. While combofix was making the log, Comodo kept popping allow or block dialogue on random .exes trying to connect to the internet, but I took no action and let combofix run its course. Eventually the dialogue went away.

    Started up firefox to get the new Java, but as I tried navigating to the MajorGeeks forums I ended up getting redirected to a random search engine. Eventually I got to the link and installed the latest Java.

    While running the GetLogs.Bat, Comodo kept flagging random .exes as well. I hope I'm not forgetting something. Aside from that, I managed to get the logs.

    I disabled the wifi connection on my laptop since I'm weary about those .exes trying to connect somewhere. For now I'm using my friend's computer as I await any further instructions. Thanks for the help so far!

    Not good.

    Are you able to run TDSSKiller?

    Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Tried running TDSS but I keep getting:

    "TDSS rootkit removing tool has encountered a problem and needs to close."

    with error signature:
    EventType : BEX P1 : TDSSKiller.exe P2 : 2.4.21.0 P3 : 4d789985
    P4 : TDSSKiller.exe P5 : 2.4.21.0 P6 : 4d789985 P7 : 00056ec9
    P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000

    I even tried it in safe mode but its still the same.

    Do you have your Windows XP boot CD?

    Move the TDSSkiller.exe file ( or redownload it ) to your root folder so that you have C:\TDSSkiller.exe to make it much easier to run.

    Then reboot your PC with your boot CD and then get into the recovery console as described below*) At the prompt window enter the below and hit enter ( it is case insensitive ):

    C:\tdsskiller.exe

    Hopefully it runs okay. Then reboot normally and see if things are working better of not. Attach the log from TDSSkiller if it made one in your root folder.

    To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:

    I only have the Gateway Windows Recovery cd, which is apparently Gateway's wierd little version version of the Xp boot cd I think. I tried booting with it but when I try to enter the recovery options it just keeps crashing with an error then restarting. I can get into what I think is a different recovery console from the recovery partition on my harddrive, but I can only use its listed commands and it wont let me run tdsskiller.exe.

    You may want to try creating and using Hiren's CD to fix the MBR. See what was posted in message # 12 of the below thread and see if you can get this CD to run.

    whistler/black internet@mbr again!

    Hey there. I followed your instructions involving Hiren's boot CD and it worked perfectly. Afterwards I was able to run TDSS killer from my desktop and it said there were no infections. I've attached the logs. Did some quick browsing and didn't get any redirects so far. Thanks so much for your help. Any more steps I should to make sure I'm in the clear?

    Looks good now.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Indeed everything seems to be going smoothly now. Thanks again!
