    I have 3 programs that I cannot get to run either from the desktop icons or the start program links. Thinking that this was virus/malware related I tried to run my antivirus first and noticed that it was deactivated. I ran Spybot and it found nothing even on a reboot scan. Was told to try running Malwarebytes It loaded then updated and immediately stopped running. Was also told to run Combofix. Ran it and it seems to have cleaned something up. It found a rootkit. Ran the tdss rootkit removal from Kapersky. Now able to run Malwarebytes and it found some trojans and cleaned them. Now the pc seems to be running but the 3 programs still will not load. I get "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." They are all 3 related in that they run our printing software but are different versions of the software. Do I just need to reinstall them to make them work again? Any thoughts or ideas? I think i have everything clean now but not sure.

    Your antivirus might be compromised. What are you using? Ideally it should be uninstalled and reinstalled.

    I need to see the log reflecting this. Please attach it.

    Would like to see the log from that too.

    And this also.
    They may be compromised too, perhaps you should uninstall and reinstall as you stated.

    You need to make sure that you have followed all of the directions in the Read and Run Me First procedures which I will link to for reference and then you can attach all of the requested logs and I can see if any baddies remain.

    At first I was unable to remove my AVG but after running the combofix I was able to uninstall it. I have now installed Avast and currently running a scan on it to see if found anything when I found and registered with this forum. Here are the log files that you requested.

    I also need to see logs which were generated by running:
    • SUPERantispyware
    • Rootrepeal (Unless you are on 64 bit)
    • MGTools
    Also run this please and attach the log from that too.

    Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Here are the files for the following scans. RootRepeal and MBR Check I don't find one for Superantispyware or MGTools. I did find a HijackThis log in the folder for MGTools. Superantispyware did not find any infections. I hope I got you everything you need this time. I am sorry if I missed something. I usually don't have to get this deep into virus/malware recovery.

    I need you to attach the whole C:\MGlogs.zip which I KNOW you have as you mentioned finding a HJT log inside the folder. So don't attach individual logs from within the folder, attach the whole zip file. :)

    The log from running SAS can be found here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs\SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 10-24-2011 - 11-16-14.log

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {72853161-30C5-4D22-B7F9-0BBC1D38A37E} - (no file)
    • O20 - Winlogon Notify: avgrsstarter - Invalid registry found

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Application Data\AVG2012
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG2012
    C:\$AVG
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\1485342328
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{72853161-30C5-4D22-B7F9-0BBC1D38A37E}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Please download Ccleaner Slim and install it. Do NOT run the registry scanner, just the cleaner itself to be rid of a chunk of temp files.

    Java(TM) 6 Update 23
    <--- Uninstall this outdated Java.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!
