So my step daughter asked me to look at her laptop. :banghead
Followed steps in malware removal sticky and removed what was detected.
Still having issues. The HDD light stays on constantly and memory is maxed out. Usually takes 10-15 minutes before HDD slows down but memory stays at about 1.85gb (2GB installed)

Thanks for any help in advance!
    Dan

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4746/programsandfeatureswin7.gif From Programs and Features (via Control Panel), please uninstall the below:
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 29

    Code:
    wmpnetwk.exe 3336 Services 0 1,348,628 K
This is using A LOT of memory and is most likely the main problem you are having with slowness.

I recommend reading and following these instructions: Fix wmpnetwk.exe In Windows 7
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The below will cleanup the remaining traces of malware as well as removing previous AV programs (AVG, McAfee).

http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/2648/hjt.gif Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double-clicking it (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Choose "Do a system scan only" and select the following lines but do not click fix until you exit all explorer windows and all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
After clicking Fix, exit out of Trend Micro HiJackThis - v2.0.4

    http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/4930/combofix.gif Fixing items using ComboFix
Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop -- but do not run it.
If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:

Save this file as CFScript.txt to your desktop. So now you should have both CFScript.txt and ComboFix.txt on your desktop.
Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe and then release.
    http://softvisia.com/users/Night_Raven/Security/cfsdnd2.gif
    This will launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
When ComboFix finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9049/javaz.gif Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3214/baticonvista7.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by right-mouse clicking it and then selecting Run as Administrator
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.
When it is finished, attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

Let me know how the PC is running after you have completed these steps.

Attached is a problem I ran into when trying to follow the steps in dealing with windows media player. I restarted the computer and went directly back to the services and performed the steps successfully. But when I restarted and went back in to change it from manual to auto (after reboot) it was already at auto (Delayed start). It is still being a resource hog too. Should I proceed with the other steps you listed or do we need to correct this problem first?

Let's try disabling it first. Open an elevated command prompt window and type in the follow commands exactly as they are shown below, pressing ENTER after each one.
    • net stop WMPNetworkSvc
    • sc config WMPNetworkSvc start= disabled

Reboot afterwards. Do not change its setting, just see how your PC is running with that service disabled (if it was successfully disabled on reboot).

I'd rather you complete these instructions first as the ComboFix items are only minor fixes.

  7. C1B3R5NYP3R

This disabled the service and memory is under 900MB at idle. I was concerned because the first step did not stop the service. However the second was successful and upon reboot the service was disabled.

I have only been running the pc for a few minutes but it is definitely much more responsive than it was. As for performance I would have to run benchmarks or something like that to determine the performance.

So do I now put it back to Auto (Delayed start) as the link you posted states and continue with your other instructions? Or is there something else that I need to do?

For now just continue with the rest of my instructions from the original post (Hijackthis, combofix, getlogs.bat)

Later we can try setting the service to Manual and then rebooting to make sure it does not automatically start itself.

Ok... so, I done all that was asked. Files are attached. As for the computer, I dont know how fast it was before the infection but in my opinion it is performing just fine.

    Delete this folder:
    • C:\Users\lwilson\AppData\Local\Conduit

The rest of your logs are clean and your memory usage is where it should be. I would recommend leaving Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service as disabled and only enabling it from services.msc if you find that you ever need it to share media with WMP since apparently that is what that service is for. Or you can try setting it to Manual and then rebooting to make sure it doesn't start automatically. It should only start when it's needed.

Another alternative is to leave it disabled and use another media player, such as VLC media player.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:

Everything seems to be running great! Thanks soo much for the help... One last thing though. Like I said this pc is my step daughters and she may need WMP network svc. So I would like to set it as manual. I tried setting it as manual through services.msc but when I went back in it after reboot it was set back to disabled. Not sure what commands are needed for command prompt.

WMP just is not cooperating!:( Going back to disabling it. Good news is she won't be able to enable it :-D So I will put VLC on here for her and set it as default.

Again, Thanks soo much. You done a fantastic job!!!
