My pc freezes then the screen will go black and the message 'Input not supported' bounces around. The monitor is an Acer AL1716. It also happens randomly

Boot into safe mode and change the screen refresh rate.
You have a setting that the monitor does not support - hence the error. Make sure you have selected: Hide modes that this monitor can not display. That way you will not pick a setting or refresh rate that is not supported.

For some reason froze when trying to boot in safe mode, booted windows normally and the 'hide modes that monitor cannot display' box is already checked. What now?:cry

LCD monitors typically, with just a few exceptions, ignore "refresh" rate settings. Since LCD pixels stay on until told to turn off, they don't need to be refreshed as phosphors do in CRT monitors. See here.

Resolution, on the other hand, could be the problem. But this sounds like to me there is a lack of communication between the graphics card (or on-board graphics) and the monitor concerning the input type - and by "type" I mean analog or digital.

The fact you say the computer freezes suggests to me a problem with the computer/graphics solution and not the monitor. But to be sure, the first thing I would do (after making sure the cables where tight and secure) is swap monitors with another computer and see if the problem follows the monitor, or stays with the computer.

A further consideration is the Video Card or IGP are "dirty" and beginning to overheat through "impaired" cooling potential causing the "display device" to "crash".

Info on the PC hardware would be a lot more "informative" than the monitor itself.

Can you provide details on the actual PC please.
