One of my end users is having an issue inserting pictures into a blank document in Word 2003 (SP2) on a Windows 2000 (SP4) machine. When they do the File, Insert Picture, and browse out and pick a file to insert, the image gets inserted at a very large size and 1/4 of it is off the page. So she has to change the margins and then everything fits better. This is a hassle for her since she has a need to insert pictures several times throughout the day. Anyone have any idea how this can be fixed, or is there some default in Options/Preferences that can change the size of the image to a scaled down version by default? Thanks for any help.

Tell her to just double-click on the picture and then go to the Size tab on the dialog box that pops up and set what she wants.

I also find that centering a picture on the page makes a difference to where it ends up. I'm sure there's a pattern as to why such actions as clicking the right align button will make a picture move to the centre when it's hanging off the right side of the page but I haven't figured THAT wierdness out yet. (Yes, I meant that using the right alignment button will move it left.) So also tell her to play around with the alignment when she gets it to a more suitable size.

I am fairly sure that this advice will work with 2003 - I am fairly sure that's what we had at uni and whatever it was worked the same as my copy of 2000.

Whether there is a default setting to make pictures fit the page at the time of insertion, I don't know. Someone else may be able to advise or I'll post back if I find anything useful in the Help.

Oh, by the way, the size of the pictures she is using may be affecting the result of the insertion if they are particularly large.

Another option might be to use image editing software to resize a batch of images. One freeware tool that could be used for this is IrfanView

Thanks for all the tips. The user just emailed me and said "I was inserting the documents while in web layout instead of in print layout, and now it seems to be working better"
