    Hi All,

I've been trying to troubleshoot an inspiron 1420 to no avail. BSOD occurs every now and then while the system is already up and running, but a BSOD occurs almost 100% of the time on a fresh boot when the system has been turned off for say more than an hour.

    I've run memory tests using:
    - Prime95
    - memtest86
    - windiag

and they all come back clean.

i've also fiddled around with BIOS settings, turning off the Flash Cache Module and setting the SATA operation to ATA.

this past weekend i decided to eliminate Vista from the equation and installed Windows XP SP2 on the machine. BSOD came back following the old pattern - on a fresh bootup after the machine has been shutdown for a while.

one other thing that i've noticed is that the BSOD (upon startup) follows a fair amount of loud disk spinning in the Optical Drive - the dvd drive that is.

The BSOD's themselves cite IRQ errors to PFN_LIST_Corrupt to issues with ntoskrnl.exe. i'm attaching a few of the minidmp files along with this post. these minidmps were recorded when the machine was still running Vista.

the fact that the BSOD occurs both under Vista and XP leads me to think that the issue is hardware related and therefore this post should prolly be made in a different subforum - but i thought i'd start here and i'm sure a Moderator would move this thread if it's infact misplaced.

    Regards !

ty Cordialis for pointing me to that thread.

i have run a few of these dump files thru both WinDBG and a utility called WhoCrashed. Sometimes different dump files point to the same module e.g. ntkrpamp.exe. other minidump files point to other modules like ntoskrnl.exe.

since i've now tried to work this machine with both XP and Vista my conjecture is that it isn't the software rather, it's the hardware that's at fault. although, i'm not sure how to narrow this further. i've run a number of memory tests and they have come back negative. i also downloaded a diagnostic utility from Fujitsu to test the Fujitsu hard-drive and that didn't find any problems either. i suppose it could be the Motherboard, the Optical Drive or even the onboard memory on the graphics card and i'm currently trying to find utilities that could help diagnose problems with these components.

Dell also offers such a tool. I'll see if I can find a link...

Edit: by the way: Dell Diagnostics are pre-installed on your PC?

Curious...have you disconnected the dvd drive to test?

Cordialis - i'll checkout the Dell diagnostic utility. And no, it's not installed on the machine by default.

Tim - that's an interesting thought. i'll give it a go later tonite, if i can figure out how to disconnect the DvD drive.
