This AM I got a notice that some Win XP updates were available. I clicked "yes" to all, and they all downloaded and began to install. During the install, I left the room, and for some reason the computer "froze." The only thing I could do was turn it off and restart.

I now get a message when I reboot: "Error loading NvQTwk. The specified module could not be found." If I click OK, everything seems to run. But with each reboot, the same notice appears.

I didn't pay any attention to what the updates were (there were 12 of them). What can I do now?

NvQtwk? look like nvidia video card tweak program? I am not sure if it relate to nvidia but try type msconfig in run and click start up tab and find if there NvQtwk in list, uncheck it. If it already unchecked, have it checked to see if it helps.

    Not there

I did that; it's not on the list.

It seems like maybe something was installed that looks for NvQTwk but can't find it because it wasn't installed.

Where would I find all the stuff I downloaded? And if I find it, could I just install all of it again? Thereby including this module)

Couple of questions Bill.... where did you download the updates from? and are you using a separate program to alert you of the latest updates?

What Graphic card do you have?

NvQTwk is part of the Detonator drivers

Try this do what johner said but this time look for NvCplDaemon
    and untick that & restart.

if it is the DET driver that messed up on install.. redownload it from Here or Nvidia

    Hotfix probs continue

The download was automatic when I opened my startup page at msn.com

The Graphics card is Creative SoundBlaster Audio PCI 128D WDM

There was no NvCplDaemon file in Start-up.

Did not yet try the DET driver re-download, pending hearing more from y'all.

I have very limited sound at this time. Arriving mail causes a very small chirpping sound quite different from usual. Attempts to play music meet with no success. Games that make noise ordinarily are now making no noise.

I went to Control panel Add/Remove. There are 15 Windows XP hotfix files, only 4 of which have any file size, etc.

I opened the Sound card file and found a message that no drivers are installed
The provider is Creative Technologies Ltd and the model # is 5.2.3633.0

We are WAY beyond anything I know about my computer. In my ignorance, I wonder if there wasn't a partial installation which aborted, and removed the driver (among god knows what else!) without getting to the installation of a new one???

Please consider this plaintive cry... Help!!!!!!!!!! :(

    Nope

    "oopsie..
go to www.nvidia.com and download the drivers for your operating system. That should replace any corrupted NVq blah blah files..
next. go here and download a new set of sound drivers for your card
    http://www.americas.creative.com/su...asp?rd=download

    test, and let us know"

    I went to each.
At nVidia, I clicked "Download Drivers"=>"Download Drivers"=>Multimedia=>WDM and downloaded. When asked if I wished to open or save, I chose open.

I then went to Creative=>SoundBlaster=>PCI=>PCI 128, downloaded and again chose open rather than save.

    I then rebooted.
    No startup music.
    The same NvQTwk error message
VERY slow opening Outlook Express and MSN.com, maybe a minute each.
Was given hardware install wizards, but in each case was advised not to proceed as these were not approved software.
    So I didn't proceed.

    What do I do next?

You should have clicked Continue installation

All this means is that windows has reverted back to its Failsafe drivers, which are very inefficient. You will now have to install the drivers AGAIN.

This is the part where you wish you hit "save" instead of "open" :D

Go download them again, and go thru the setup procedure again, and Reboot. Once you get the haredware wizard wait untill you get that prompt again, then hit continue and your screen should refresh or somthing like that, and you will have loaded the new drivers :) and dont worry they are fine, i know im using them!

    Okey-doke, sort of

I went back and again downloaded nVidia WDM driver and the Creative SoundBlasterPCI 128 driver. I assume that is all I needed to download. Am I right?

The dialog in the download boxes was a little different, and when I rebooted, I DID get the start-up music, but I also got the error message "Error loading NvQTwk. The specified module could not be located."

I tried several games that have sound and that seems ok.

But what of the error message? Is it "live?" Or a dead letter? How do I get rid of it if I'm not going to do any more?

How do I know if I need to do anything else?

And what of all those hotfix files in Add/Remove that don't seem to have any volume (making me wonder if they were downloaded but failed to install?)

Are there other surprises that await from this abortionate attempt on my part to install fixes sent by MS this morning?

This site is an incredible resource which has been very helpful, not only this time but on earlier occasions. I really appreciate the kindness and the help.

I'm pretty sure you won't see a size next to the hot fixes..

in your msconfig..startup tab, do you see ANYTHING with Nv as the prefix?

Bill, about the hotfixes, go back to windows update let it check your box then click on installation history. There you will see what was successful and what wasn't

    Augie,

I'll reveal my lack of knowledge by telling you i don't know where the Windows update is, what "let it check your box" means, or where the record of installations is.

This sounds like the right idea, though. Could you give me some directions?

    Bill ;)

    No NV in statrup

    Kodo,

I don'tt see anything that starts with nv.

Some of the Hotfix files do have a size, but most don't. This is the same as it was earlier today; downloading the drivers had no effect on that.

I have to leave town tomorrow for a few days and will be out of touch from tomorrow AM until Tuesday. But any and all help will be appreciated.

I'll check my messages again in the AM before I leave.

    How to reinstall??

    Augie, Kodo, et al,

I did find Windows Update, and I did find the installation history. There were about a dozen updates that are listed as "failed" installatrions. But I didn't see anything that said how to reinstall them.

Interestingly, as was diagnosed here, one was the nVidia driver and another was the Creative Tech driver, both of which we found elsewhere and loaded.

I feel like maybe if I can find a way to reinstall the proffered drivers I will be made "whole" again. How can I do that?

    I'll be away until Tuesday.

As I said earlier, I really appreciate the kind help I have received here.
    Best..

    Bill ;)

Maybe you can't see the filer because it is a hidden file... just a thought.

Bill, you mentioned earlier that you saw 15 hotfixes seen in add/remove. That is how many I have to date.

This is what I have. I try to keep my server up 24/7 but sometimes it's down. Try later if you can't get it. I sometimes forget to run it when I boot.:D

    continued problem

I have been away from home for 10 days, just got back.
I tried the various advice above, most helpfully the two installs recommended by Kodo.. The computer now works fine, but I still get a message on startup that says

"Error loading NvQTwk. The specified module could not be found"

I'd sure like to know how to get rid of that. If nothing else, it's a constant reminder of how little I know about my computer!! :(

My guess is that the aborted download, mentioned at the top of this thread, caused something to load that looks for that tweak. I didn't get the tweak installed, and probably didn't even need the tweak.

    Any/all help much appreciated!!

    Bill ;)
