I have a salvage machine with an old SiS NIC card.

I downloaded the driver from SiS and unzipped it.

The readme file says run setup or setup -s

But I don't know if this means run it from the command box.

Please give detailed explanation how to install this. Or better yet, point to a driver with installer as is more common for software these days.

I have tried just clicking on setup.exe in the directory and not gotten any results.

    Hi

If you could link to the SiS location you downloaded the driver I will have a look at the files as it maybe a manual install via Device Manager you need, but from what you posted of the model of NIC then this one at Packard Bell seems the same and its just an exe installer

    Ok sure,

It's just the SiS home site and the driver location is here:

    http://www.sis.com/download/agreement.php?id=153181&url=download_step1.php?id=153181

    for sl900 v. 1.19 Lan driver

It's a zip file that opens about 30 things but there's no way for me to run setup and go through it. The goal is to get this on a disk and be able to run it for possible future needs. The card itself has few markings. I've run the Everest diagnostic prog. to get what info I can on it. But this lan driver seems to be good for a lot of product.

Everest reports an SiS 900 Based 10/100 Ethernet ... something. Totally generic NIC card with a Windows sticker on it.

Thanks for answering. Setup with no disks is always frustrating.

    Hi

Sorry forgot to follow up on this and wondered why I had downloaded that driver Zip file, if you still dont have this installed, then try the below.

The SIS driver you linked too does have a setup file, and all you would need to do is to unzip the folder and then double click setup (no need for commandline steps) or try the batch files thats named setup -s and double click it to run, if you have and I note the comment above "no way for you to run setup" please explain further, with any error messages gained?

You can do this manually from Device Manager and do you have a listing for the network card in device manager or a unknown item with a yellow ! mark? if so mention all.

If you do have a network card mentioned or unknown device, then follow this.

    • Click the device and choose the Driver tab
    • Click Update Driver
    • Click No not at this time
    • Next
    • Choose Search for best driver in these locations and tick the Include this location in the search and click the browse button and naviage to the location of that SIS downloaded folder
    • Next and follow any prompts

Hopefully it should find the driver.

Eventually I managed to find the installer Icon-- a pretty common one but didn't think of it. It looks like a blue boomarang.

With all that NIC card fooling around, I overlooked a motherboard connection and used that AND reinstalled the OS followed by a technique given by my ISP to get a fresh IP address and DNS server ident. These things cleared up
the ex'ed out icon problem and the ex'ed out icon itself can just be deleted.

I am also seeking advice on using a RAID card as a simple IDE port for two drives. The card is a Rosewill RC 200.

My newer Biostar board only has one IDE header which makes having the dvd burner and two drives problematic. I am told I can bypass RAID setup for plain recognition of two drives, one installed as master on each Rosewill header.

    Can you confirm that?

Alternatively, what is the cheapest source of a PCI IDE card? I think the brand name is Promise.
