Install Ubuntu 10.04 fails at same spot

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04. I don't like 12.xx as I've had a severe stroke, and like the 10.04 format. I get lost in 12.04. I -may- have changed something in the BIOS setups. I've had it installed before (dual boot) on this machine. Now, it -always- fails at the same spot, with the same error. ("May be setup files are corrupt etc".) About 30 percent into the install. I've downloaded fresh ISO files etc.

    My machine:

    Gateway W3609 Desktop machine
    XP Pro, SP2
    4 GB Memory
320 GB main/original Seagate hard disk
1 TB WD hard disk added shortly after purchase of the Gateway machine

I've used USB and CDROM versions of Ubuntu 10.04 ISO files. I've tried "going from scratch" as well as wubi.exe.

    Any ideas/instructions?

Although this is not your error
perhaps you can try to boot the CD and select Try Ububtu withour installing and after the desktop appears, click the install 10.04 icon.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried that, with the error resulting.

I also have down -various- checks on the hardware (bad sectors, partition errors/integrity etc).

    "I also have down......"

    Should have been "done". (See what a stroke can do to you?) ;>}

Are you installing codecs, updates, etc... at time of installation? If so, perhaps the failure is occurring due to updating of a distro that is no longer supported?

Alternatively, you could install the 12.04 LTS and add the "gnome classic" package, which mimics the 10.04 format you prefer (you and MANY others!). Your machine specs would certainly support this option, if you think this is a solution you could live with. If so, here you go...

I just read a post today from someone having the same error as you Dan, trying to install 12.04 so I don't think it is based on what version. I'll follow the thread and if anyone comes up with a solution, I'll either post it here or post the link to the thread.

Ahhh, OK, thank you very much.

    Heydon,
No codecs. I'm just trying to install the Ubuntu operating system. It worked for me before on this exact machine.

Dan Penny, that thread dealt with a Windows 8 computer so anything said there would not be real helpful for an XP computer. Sorry.

If I stumble across anything else, I'll throw you a link.

Based on your and Plodr's previous posts, I'm back to my original post.

Is it possible the failure is due to "updates" at time of installation, for a 10.04 OS that is no longer updated? Not necessarily codecs, but updates?

At the risk of being condescending, are you sure the disk/image is good? If you're CERTAIN about the MD5sum and installation media, can you install without codecs & updates at time of installation?

Given the consistency of the failure point (as well as a previously successful installation on the same machine, at an earlier date, presumably?), this sounds like a corrupted ISO, or corrupted disk, or a bug in update at time of installation for a version that is no longer updated...
