Install Vista on Network?

    I have a pc with vista on and a laptop with xp pro , i would like to put vista on the laptop but the dvd writer will only read cd roms (i have no idea why), So i was wondering if i network the 2 would it be possible to install vista over the network. Unless of course someone has an idea why a dvdrw would suddenly show as a dvdram and only read cdroms, i think its just doing it to wind me up lol

    Have you tried uninstalling drive from Device Manager and rebooting? This will reload drivers. Or alternatively update drivers from the manufacturer.
    I would fix the DVD problem rather than do a network install. If these options don't work, you may be better off reposting in the Hardware forum and give some details of the comp - manufacturer, model, etc.

    Hi

    Following on from lbmest's driver idea, also delete the upper and lower filters as they can cause this issue at times, a guide HERE on how to do this.

    Alternative is will this laptop boot to USB, need to enter the bios and check the menus for enable boot to USB or check the Boot menu for the boot order and see if USB is an option? if it is then we can use a method I use and pop Vista onto USB pen (needs to be around 4GB) and create a bootable USB pen, steps are HERE

    Well ive uninstalled it and tried the filters thing and it made no difference so i, think i,ll try the usb install, its in the list under boot order, it has the options of usb cdrom, usb floppy,usb superdisk and usb hardisk, it isnt at present showing as a boot option though when i start up, which usb option should i choose and how do i enable it as a startup option.
