I'd like to re-address this issue again....can you install Windows XP Pro O/s on an external HD or does the drive need a motherboard etc., to except the software? Programs like picasa does not operate well on an external drive if you just load picasa on it to hold all photo's. Thankyou

No, XP will not install to an external drive.

Can't recall where, but I have seen instructions for hacking XP to make it work from an external drive, but recall it as being rather complicated (involving a number of registry changes, I think).

I wonder if using an external SATA drive might work though? I think some, if not all, motherboards see external SATA drives as internal drives.

Maybe someone else knows if that was only on the first gen or two of motherboards/BIOS'es that supported the SATA interface. If so, I hope they'll post that info here and comment on this suggestion.
