Install Win7 from External HDD

I have a WD Passport (G: - 150gb). I made a small partition out of it (I: = 5gb) and formatted it to NTFS. I then extracted my Win7 .iso with winrar onto the small partition. I went into drive manager and made the partition I: "active". I plugged my external HDD into my netbook.

I restarted my EeePc 1000he and changed the BIOS settings - Boot Priority = External Dev. | Disabled Fast Boot | Disable Boot Booster. Then saved changes.

I restarted the netbook and it never shows me a screen where I can boot Win7 to install it.

The only thing I can figure is that the other partition (G:) isn't marked as "active" and it has just random pictures and files on it.

    Any help is appreciated!!!

**I will "autoplay" when windows xp is loaded, but I don't want to install form there since it won't boot...

I don't understand what you mean? Install Win7 on my external HDD? I'd rather have Win7 installed on my actual Netbook...

Didn't know you could install from a "ghost" drive...Can I format and install fresh using that method?

Why boot W7 from an external, not even sure if that works.:confused Just burn the ISO to disk and have at least 30GB on your Netbook available in a brand new partition, just the C:/Windows files are 11GB plus you need space for the work files to decompress properly besides all the temp files.

because I am installing it on a netbook and there is no disk drive...

Well I would, but the external drive is small and I share it with my wife so I cannot be taking it around with me. Rather just have my netbook setup to go...

I was told the install form another partition thing is risky and I don't want to break my new comp. I know you can install from a USB Flash drive so I just need to get it done with my external HDD. Can anyone else help??

nothing too risky installing win 7 on a 2nd partition. All you need to do, is set up the partition(s) with either the xp setup disk, or if there's xp already there, you will need another partitioning tool (i use Easus)

If you're unsure about installing and accidentally overwriting the xp partition, just label the drives accordingly (i.e. c: will be WindowsXP and d: can be Windows7)

then start the installer from within windows xp, by mounting in a virtual drive (like Daemon Tools) .
