Installation of new Li-ION Battery

I purchased a new Model PA2487U main battery for my notebook. As expected it indicated a discharged condition so I placed unit on charge for 24 hours. It then indicated a 100% charge, however, upon turning the notebook on, after being unplugged for three or four days, the battery was again discharged. Suspecting a defective product I contacted the vendor who claims this is normal, that all new Li-ION batteries must be fully charged and discharged five times before normal preformance can be expected. Is this true? No documentation supporting this came with the battery. Toshiba's website has a general statement to this, however, they seem to be talking about their older NiCad units with memory issues. Is there any information that supports what the vendor claims?

 

I am trying it but (1) it will take time to complete 5 cycles, then see if the leakage drain issue is resolved (2) I had purchased this from a vendor on eBay, a vendor which eBay has apparently had a problem with and since removed. If these batteries are old or been exposed to high temps. they will behave this way. I have applied for a possible refund. (3) I'm a retired electronics engineer, I don't like to "just just try things" without having some idea of what to expect and why. I found nothing so far on the Internet that suggests cycling new Li-ION type units. I thought this site would have had experience with this.

 

I was able to find a good scientific article on this type of battery. While cycling is recommended for NiMH and NiCD batteries, Li-Ion batteries do not require this, and it only shortens their life! One cycle may be required to synichronize the computer's charging software.
