so i had my computer up and running for a couple weeks now, everything was fine...so i went online and bought a thermalright true spirit cooler and got it today. i intalled it, (while i was installing the power switch was off, but the cable was still connected to the power supply) and now i get nothing, no power at all to the motherboard, could it be the motherboard? or is it more likely the power supply. the power supply would make weird noises under load like when playing games and such, like a clicking sound, so it might have been giving out the whole time slowly and finally completely died.

    any ideas?

it was a 500w crap power supply that came with my case

    my specs

    i7 920
    radeon 5800
    6gb patriot memory
    ASRock X58 extreme

Did you bump a cable while installing it? I would unplug all cables and replug them in again.

You also may want to try and clear your CMOS

luckily its fixed now, no need to rma anything :cool

the power supply fried...heres how i finally put the pieces together.

it made a ticking sound only when under load, and sometimes faintly when the hard drive was searching or writing/reading...then this morning i woke up and turned on the monitor (i dont turn off the computer at night) and it had the window up with the option to start windows normally, or in safe mode...so i figured it must have cut out over night, then turned on again somehow and gotten stuck on that screen

the power supply that cut out was a Raidmax brand 500w max that i basically cheaped out on

this time i bought an Antec 650w power supply, its the same size but its about twice as heavy, the cables are thicker and more flexible, there are many more connectors and they are black and click on better...guess you get what you pay for with power supplies huh

Well this is a good example of cheap power supplies. I've learned the hard way before. It can fry stuff
