So i recently bought the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (120mm) and installed it but when i turned on my computed i was getting no display what so ever. I tried with a hdmi connected to my tv which i usually use on this desktop and then i tried on another monitor still no luck.I am also getting a red light next to the ram and tried different ram but still nothing. I then put the stock cpu cooler back on but im still getting the issue.

    My rig is as follows

HIS HD 7970 IceQ X² 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 750W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

    Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor -
    Retail

Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic

    Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard

Sounds like re-assembly time to me. It's easy enough to re-seat the video card and RAM, and to unplug and re-plug every cable, but you've probably already done those, maybe several times.

Don't ya wish PC Cases were just big, open work-benches sometimes?

You need to look at your motherboard manual and see what the red LED means. It may simply be a warning to tell you the computer is still plugged into the wall (thus the PSU is still supplying the ATX Form Factor standard required +5Vsb standby voltage), reminding you to unplug from the wall BEFORE even thinking of touching your RAM.

Or the "red" LED could indicate some error condition. Again - check your manual.

Please note installing or removing RAM when power is applied to the motherboard could [too] easily result in destroyed RAM, and possibly a damaged motherboard. And of course, proper ESD precautions when handling RAM or working inside the PC case is essential too.

I agree with Christine and you need to verify all your cable connections - not just the PSU cables. Note motherboards typically take two, sometimes 3 separate connections from the PSU. And many graphics cards require separate power connections too.

Also note the Chipset may be expecting to see the standard CPU fan connected to the motherboard's CPU Fan header.

I hope you did not just void your CPU warranty with that aftermarket cooler. Note "Retail" typically means the CPU was "boxed" with an OEM supplied heatsink fan assembly, and as such, the CPU AND cooler are designed, intended AND "expected" to be used as "a unit" - that is, together. The AMD CPU Warranty is crystal clear on this,
"This Limited Warranty shall be null and void if the AMD microprocessor which is the subject of this Limited Warranty is used with any heatsink/fan other than the one provided herewith."

To all reading, please note I am just the messenger. I am not expressing my opinion. I provided a link to the warranty so all can read and learn the facts and consequences if contemplating the use of a 3rd party cooler. Also note the Intel warranty has the same terms.

If the warranty is of no concern to you (and it often isn't for enthusiasts and extreme overclockers) or already past 3 years, then no problem - as long as you understand the consequences.

Wha-?!! You mean - we can't blame you for EVERYTHING?!! Darn... (is this retroactive? I've already got 114 things I've blamed on you...)

You would be surprised how often and, ummm, "enthusiastically" I get "attacked" when some folks read this. They don't want to hear it so they [often firmly] believe no one needs to hear it either. :( I note those are often regulars who frequently recommend aftermarket coolers when users encounter heat issues and I get after them for NOT noting the consequences (that's not good forum "advising" - IMHO).

But the fact of the matter is, both Intel and AMD need to ensure their CPUs are properly cooled through the 3-year warranty period and the only way they can ensure that is if they provide a decent cooling solution themselves. So that's what they do. Both Intel and AMD provide excellent coolers with their CPUs, fully capable of providing adequate cooling even with mild to moderate overclocking (which also voids warranties, BTW, but that's another issue). And, since they know many of their CPUs will be installed in HTPCs where fan noise is objectionable, the OEM fans today are pretty quiet too - certainly quieter than graphics card fans.

We have to remember it is the case's responsibility to provide a sufficient supply of cool air flow through the case. The CPU HSF need only toss the CPU's heat into that flow.

These are Intel and AMD terms and as users we agree to those terms when we decide to keep using these products. Therefore you cannot blame me on this one. So are we at 113, or didn't this one count? ;)

Hubby's locked away in his studio for the morning so he's blissfully unaware that HE will be taking blame for more of these issues. I usually blame him for All Things Computer anyway - he knows most of these honchos anyway. "Why did YOU let this design engineer use a chinese-puzzle-box on this case-opening latch system?!! What's wrong with plain ol' thumb screws? Why'd you let him do that?!!"

    Things like that.

I've been battling over airflow and static-dust buildup for all of my life, it seems, and he's never once solved that. CERTAINLY that's his fault, therefore.

So, you'll be sitting at "113" for a while, I guess. Not to worry, though... you'll git yers, yet!

Now... back to the topic, I suppose... I still think "wide open cases" would be a great benefit. I love the old original PC desktops - big enough for a swimming pool. They were sized to allow a maint worker to practically crawl inside and get to every part without touching anything else...

Something else I've enjoyed on SOME motherboards in the past few years - the installation of a Power-On Button instead of making me 'hot-wire' the PowerButton's connector pins just to test the motherboard.

I fear we have strayed from the topic at hand here people... well when I say we I mean you naturally :-D

    As for the OP

Sounds like you need to check every wire, tedious I know... but it's the only way to be sure. Pay attention to the CPU, Motherboard & GPU power cables.

I am actually amazed how similar our rigs are, I'm confused about a few things though. You say you have the "Samsung 840 Pro SATA 6Gb/s Basic", which is it? Also "Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB)" 4X4GB is 8GB, how do you get 16GB? I love sarcasm, I really do, unfortunately that was just to clarify. Maybe I can fit some sarcasm in later :-D

Since we have the same mobo I would suggest you watch it when you boot up, there are 4 LEDs that tell you if something is wrong with the RAM, CPU, VGA & Boot Devices respectively. I'd love to post a pc (can't find one), but you can see where they are on page "1-27" of the manual. If it happens to be the RAM you're in luck, you can try the "MEMOK" feature on the top right of the board when it's on just press that & it'll find a way to make the RAM work (timings, voltage etc).

Hope this helps or leads to the real issue. I forgot the sarcasm, oh dear :-o

Those are actually easy - if short term memory is still intact. ;)

    1. Shoot for good "front-to-back" flow of air through the case. Large (120mm or larger move more air while making less noise.

    2. Static - simple. Don't move. No squirming in your chair or clothes. Clip a grounding strap to your earlobe and facility ground. Or, unplug the computer from the wall and touch bare metal of the case interior before reaching in.

If you are on carpet, a slight mist from a spray bottle with a plain water helps (just avoid air intake on computer).

    3. Dust - only buy cases with removable, washable air filters.

    Ummm, in what universe does 4 x 4 = 8? ;)

Hey - that wasn't straying. I was waiting, waiting, waiting for you and your 990FX mobo to finally appear! I was merely treading the forum's water!

As far as memory arithmetic goes... maybe this is one of those "I just washed my fingers and they won't do a thing properly" - including typing a PLUS sign instead of an ASTERISK-Multiply sign! Darned fingers...

But in the world of favorite screw-ups, it WOULD be great if one of those Mem Sticks looked more like the Titanic, all askew. I love quick fixes when they're correct!

The RAM universe where multiplication is meaningless, the neighbouring HDD universe is similarly obtuse in that 2TB actually means 1.81TB :-D

    Seems legit :p

I'd kill to go back to those days, now it's BSOD GPU's, RAM Timings not working, Malware, Temp issues... ahh the simple days :-o

    Where has the OP gone?

lol But there are two universes there.

In the math universe, 1Kb equals 1024 bytes. In the hard drive maker's universe, 1Kb = 1000 bytes. Plus, some space is always used up by the files tables when the disk is formatted.

  12. 2-Bit-Geek

    2-Bit-Geek Sergeant

They should create a drive with the stated amount (2TB) & allocate extra space for the file tables ect IMO. Unless there is an asterisk next to the memory quote like this, 2TB*

Blah, Blah, 7200RPM, Blah, Blah, Reliability, etc

    *Actual space nearer 1,8TB.

Isn't that a breach of the trade description act otherwise?

    "They should..."

Yes. Alas, in our world of precedent-setting standards, the computer industry has foisted us into a "history of accepted practices" now. The 15" monitors that were "actually 14.1's", etc.

If there's any justice at all, every computer user has muttered the same complaint, and more, heard it muttered many more times.

    Now... it's more like...
    http://www.binaryoptions.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/lemmings-off-a-cliff.gif

Or is it more like "It just doesn't matter!"

    http://s3.vidimg.popscreen.com/original/1/eG04b2JzMTI=_o_it-just-doesnt-matter.jpg

OK. Now THIS is definitely straying! (Or is this merely keeping the smoke going to see if the OP's still kickin' around?)

If you dig into the data sheets and specs, there usually is. As for allocating extra space for the file tables - nah! They cannot really do that because they do not know how the drive will be used. Will it be a boot drive or just storage? Will there be more than one partitions or many? FAT32 or NTFS? Nor do they know how many sectors will be flagged as bad at the factory too - there are always some.

Not that "it has always been this way" is a valid excuse, but in this case, it is.

I also note looking at two drives here, a Samsung and a WD, both have printed on the labels how big a Mb is. On the Samsung, it is pretty clear:
    1Mb = 1,000,000 bytes / 1Gb = 1,000,000,000 bytes

No. There is always some leeway in stuff like that. Car engines are rarely ever exactly the same size. A 3.5L engine may really be a 3.476 or 5.0 a 4.82.
