Hi guys, I hope you can help me out as I am looking at a boat anchor or a good target for my shotgun. I just bought a new video card a AGP geforce fx 5700 256mb. I was having problems before with my old card that I had (geforce 3 ti200). What would happen was that the computer would freeze on openning web pages sometimes and on games and the odd time the screen would flicker or go blank or the computer would crash, windows would restart and it would state that it was a graphics driver problem. I updated the driver on the motherboard which is old with a 1.7 p4 and SIS chipset 512 mb ddr. Also I updated and tried old nvidia drivers with no success. I then decided to get a new case with more cooling and a new 400 watt dual fan pu, also the new video card. I put it all together and now the problem is worse it won't even start any graphic intense programs it just freezes with a blank screen or the intial page only paritailly drawn before any game even starts the only way that I can unfreeze is to push the reset button. Everything else works fine but no games. I have talked to the manufacturer and he said to update the agp SIS chipset and IDE chipset as well as the motherboard BIOS..I did it and still no go..What can be the problem?? They are going to send me another card..Do you guys think it's the motherboard??I hope not as I can't afford anymore expence..Also do you guys think I should take it in to a repair shop??I'm not very rich so I can't afford much..I just want the basics and enjoy the odd game!!!
The motherboard is generic from the manufacturer don't know much about it.
    80 gig HDD, soundblaster live..
Thanks any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Did you make sure all your existing drivers where deleted and completly wiped from your system before installing the new drivers for the new card? Haveing multipul drives can cause conflits when graphicly intense applications are run. Use a too like drivercleaner, which can be downloaded from MG homepage, to clean out your old driver.

also make sure you have the latest version of DirectX. This can be updated with microsoft update, or directly from micro$oft.com.

Also what brand of power supply did you buy. I know from experience buying a cheeper one is a really bad idea. I had a bargen $50 420W Power supply, and because of the power my computer needs, it all most fried every thing. :(

I don't think it's the power supply as it is bigger than the small one I had before and on the wattage sticker it has a higher min. like 300 watts whereas my old one was only 175, and the problem was there before the new pu just not as bad. I do have direct 9 installed. I never tried the drivercleaner..I didn't uninstall the SIS chipset drivers as I didn't know how and the video card manuf. said it was not needed..I'll try the drivercleaner tommorow as I'm at work right now. Also how would a guy Know that the pu is not adequate? also is there a possibility that it could be the HDD??I did disk check and it's says it's okay..

Even though the power supply is bigger...that doesnt mean that it could support you system. My system only took around 270W but the cheepo 420W PSU still burnt out.

Which version of directX 9 do you have installed? I believe the newest is 9.0c or 9.0d?

You dont want to uninstall the chipset driver, you want to uninstall any video drivers that you have on the computer. This can be done in, start, settings, control pannel, add/remove programs.

Then run drivercleaner...and only uninstall the video card leftovers. Then you can install the newest drivers. Newest Nvidia Driver

I am assuming that you are using WinXP or 2000. That is what operating system the driver is for. :)

    See if all that works.

I dont think the problem is the Harddrive. If you ran a scan and everything is ok..you should be good.

How often do you check for viruses, spyware, and adware?

Do you use antivirus, spybot S&D, and Adaware, to scan your pc?

Let me know how it goes. :)

[edit] What is the manufactor of the PSU. I can look it up, and see what you have. :)

I went to the website where I bought it and copied this from it..It's a Power up!! Also I have Norton and system works as well as System mechanic 4 pro as well as spybot and spy sweeper full retail versions and all are updated and have scanned system and a-okay..I'm also considering formatting my HDD and only putting one game on it then trying it..What do you think??

You didnt happen to buy this from tigerdirect.com did you? I think this PSU is very simular to the one i had. I should last you. I had a lot of stuff running, for a long time, thats why it blew on me.

Good brands, are thermaltake, and Antec. If you want the best you are going to have to spend $100. but yours should be ok. ;)

Yep.. this is what I can afford!! I would love to get a better one but like I said it did this but not as bad with old psu in my old case..with the old card. It sounds like I'm screwed, I just don't want to pay someone $150 to tell me it's the M/B. What do you think??

And by the way thanks for the help..

The PSU should hold you out for a while. I dont think your screwed.

Try out the driver information i gave you. If that doesnt work, post again, and maybe someone else can take a wack at this. :)

    Hoped i helped!

Okay I uninstalled the Nvidia driver, re-booted, ran driver cleaner and cab cleaner. Then installed the newest driver from nvidia (tried old ones as well) put an old game in madden 2004 and never even got the intro the screen went black and the system crashed, upon start-up it said device driver was at fault like usual. Do you guys think I should try to format the HDD and then try it?? or should I wait for the new card to come and then go from there?..Is there a utility or something on how to check your mother board/processor???? Does this sound like a motherboard or a processer problem???

    Thanks for the help,

Losing it, lost it, it's gone.......

Hum if it is stating a driver probem. It could be your motherboad driver. Do the same process as before, and go to your motherboards manufactors website, and download there latest drivers.

A last resort would be formating, and reinstalling the operating system.

Already did that, do feel that it could be the motherboard???I guess I should wait for the replacement video card then try it..then I'll do a format..then failing that I'll change out the motherboard..I currently have a old P4 1.7 with 512 ram, do think that I could just get another motherboad and use my processor and ram???What do think of an a-bit board for a socket 478..I don't want to totally upgrade everthing with PCI express around the corner..please give your opinion???

    Thanks,

Well I took out the new geforce 5700 256 mb video card and put my old geforce 3 ti200 128 mb, and it works just like before it will load some games and some really graphiclly intense ones it won't but it gets further than the 5700. I think that I should wait for the replacement 5700 before I order a new motherboard or format..Does anyone know where I can get a utility or some tips on how to troubleshoot your motherboard??Also what is a good chipset on a motherboard (VIA, SIS, Intel)??

Sorry it took long for me to post. I fell ill and its monday so the school work is stacking up fast.

I would wait for the replacement card to come in and see if that fixes anything. If you are still experiencing the same problems, maybe a reinstall of the operating system is the way to go. As a last resort replace your motherboard.

    All P4 are socket 478.

Abit is well know maker of motherboards. I would have no problem reccomending one. Also consider Asus, and Chantec.

Right now Intel chipsets are the best for Intel chips. SIS, and VIA are good too, but Intel seems to work the best. :)

    Use this

Aida32 to see what your memroy is. Then report back. ;)

Thanks for the help Overcooked, do you think a Chaintec card is okay it supports what I have and it has more features than the rest for the same price also it has Via chipset???
    What do you think???

I think you're on the right track now. Motherboards are the root of all evil :(

    As a couple of examples:
I had an Abit mobo and an Asus video card together once which resulted in lousy FPS and lots of lag. Nothing could explain the problem, the cards both worked fine in other systems but just not together. Incompability! So I changed to another mobo (can't remember which) and that was it.

I've also seen mobos freeze just like you're describing below. Probably due to the same thing, incompability, or manufacturing error, I don't know. Usually if you change to another brand the problem goes away. Expensive, but that's how it is if you do wrong :)

I always build on Gigabyte mobos nowadays. Of the somewhat hundreds of systems I've built nothing ever runs smoother than with Gigabyte. And a good rule is not to be first with using new technology, that's usually very expensive. Too often resulting in swaps, hours on the phone with vendors etc etc...

In your case I'd try to loan a mobo from a friend or such, just to try. Couldn't hurt ;)

    Good luck!

You don't think that an a-bit mobo would be alright with a chaintech video card or should I spend the extra $15 to get a chaintech mobo?? Do you think when I get the replacement video card that I should just wait and get a new mobo or should I try it in this old motherboard just to see if it will work??Could it fry the 5700 video card???
    Thanks for the help..

Also when you change a motherboard should a guy format your HDD to get rid of the chipset drivers for the old board???1. format hard drive 2. install memory and CPU 3. put back in computer 4. start up system and put O/S on 5. then update BIOS. and drivers??? Or is there something I'm forgetting!!!I think I'm going to go with the A-bit card the only difference is that there is no Serial ATA port. I think that this card will do only temporarally until PCI express and/or the 64 AMD gets more popular with more support..
    Please give comments..

Sorry it does have a serial ata but only is capable 2 gig of ram instead of 4 gig on the other..no big deal though I'm going to upgrade next year anyway..

There is no problem with using a different manufactor with motherboards, and video cards. The only time manufactors must or most of time must be the same is when you are dealing with dual channel memory.

I would try the replacement card in your mobo. Since you have system stability right now, i dont expect it to fry the card. The problem right now could possible be the card.

Good choice not going with serial ata, and the other goodies. PCI express is here very soon, so its best to wait.

Deffinitly format the harddrive if you change your motherboard. It seems that you have the steps all down.
