Installed Vista Codec Pack, now .wmv's won't play (all other formats ok)

    Hi all,
I have just installed the Vista Codec Pack for the 1st time and all video formats play fine/perfect. However, my .wmv files now don't play at all, the file association is the same as before (opens with windows media player), even the thumbnails are showing fine. When trying to open a wmv file the player just opens with a blank window with no video or sound.

As I say, everything else is perfect, mpgs, x-vid, avi's, mkv's etc.

I did try asking the guy (shark) on his forums but he seems to just tell everyone how its all down to windows, nothing to do with his software, how the software doesn't touch the MS codecs etc, all MS's fault etc.. which isn't very helpful. Yesterday all my wmv files were playing perfectly until I installed this codec pack.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as unfortunately I have quite a few wmvs:cry

I am running Vista sp2 (Home Basic), fully updated & cared for, installed the very latest version of the Vista Codec Pack 5.6.9, and regularly scan for malware with Norton IS 2010 + MalwareBytes.

    Hi

If you uninstall that Codec Pack do your WMVs play ok?

Hi Halo, thanks for your answer, I don't really want to un-install just to try it to be honest so I don't know. wmvs were playing fine until this install though. I have heard so many nightmares about un-installing codecs and ending up with a broken system.

In the 'settings' panel of the codec software there is an option to 'render' a media file and when I choose the wmv it renders or plays fine but not in Win' Media Player, I find it strange because the file is recognised, the thumbnail shows and so on.

At the end of the day I can live without MS wmv usage as most movies are in other formats, also many vids these days are in flv format which plays fine, I just thought I would ask on this great forum in case anyone had an idea about a basic setting I am probably missing or something...........to conclude.......I am happier being able to play the many other formats without wmv than playing wmv without all the other formats if you see what I mean.
