:confused hi all, i have a compaq presario 1700T model # 17xL2, 12.2 gb ide hd, this machine had win 98se, on it but i wiped the drive and installed win xp pro sp2 when i attempted to use the recovery disc to install the drivers it would not work, i was on a forum that instructed me to go to hp's site where they have a file called sp20816.exe (system board adjustment cd) i tried numerous times followed all the instructions but to no avail, i can't get internet on this thing because i can't get the correct drivers. please note that prior to this install i did successfully install puppy linux and was able to connect to my wireless connection quickly, but this computer does not belong to me it's my niece's and she wants xp pro, if anyone can help me it would be greately be appreciated.

    Hi,

I couldn't find that model on the HP website 1700T 17xL2. Do you have a link to HP's page for it?

One thought is I don't see drivers for wireless cards for other models in the 1700T series. Perhaps the wireless card was added later? Do you still have the puppy linux CD? Maybe you could run puppy off the CD (don't install) but if it allows internet then go into the System Properties/Manager and get the name of the wireless card. Then maybe we can find drivers for XP.

More info on driver problems can be found in the Drivers Forum (imagine that :innocent ). Read the first sticky, run Everest and create a report using the steps in this post. Then attach the report as described in this post. This should tell everyone that wants to help exactly which drivers you need, then we can post some links for ya!

(for future reference, please post driver problems in the Drivers Forum - thanks!)

These are all the XP drivers at HP's site for XP on a 1700T model
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...c=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=95248#N146

I see sp29725.exe for your model also
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...228&product=95248&sw_lang=&key=null&site=null

As a last resort, buy a USB wifi dongle and use that to connect if you can't get the wireless chipset to connect to the internet because you lack the proper motherboard drivers. I see nothing about motherboard drivers, unfortunately.

    Here are the 98 drivers
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...c=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=95248#N146
which includes what you might need.

actually, i can't do it this way, from this log. i need to see the actual PCI VENDOR DEVICE numbers to look up drivers.

    http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/3882/deviceid.jpg

    example, in that pic, VEN = 10EC , DEV = 8168

Get the hardware IDs for your missing devices and post them here.

Perhaps someone else can help you with the everest.log. I don't use it much so not much experience with it

    Hello,
If you are going to get on the internet, you will have to use dial-up because I do not see any NIC.

    Really?
Apparently it might have a PCMCIA card because it did get an internet connection by some means.

hi plodr, when i put the puppy linux trial, i got internet, but i removed puppy and installed win xp pro sp2, and when i attempted to install the drivers with the recovery disc it would not run, somebody suggested that i go to the hp site and get the drivers there but to no avail, since then it was also suggested to me to install sp3 but nothing has changed i have tried via dial up but i get a message saying that i need to install modem drivers and other drivers, i submitted the everest report but that is not sufficient, i put the puppy linux trial again and it has a report generator called hardreport i am attaching a copy i hope this can help, your help is greatly appreciated, thank you, i am going to look up the drivers available from intel. peace

    First,
I would like to apologize about stating that you did not have a NIC. Shows you how much I was paying attention to that first post. :-o

It seems you have a combo modem NIC card as stated here.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=20&product=95248&sw_lang=

In the inf file of that driver, the Vendor ID and Device ID are

    VEN_14F1&DEV_1803&SUBSYS_00230E11

    Conexant Combo 10/100 NIC

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find drivers for XP but I will keep looking.

Going back to the original post, you stated you connected wirelessly with Puppy.
Do you have a card inserted into your PCMIA slot?

I believe the best bet for a driver of the Conexant Combo 10/100 NIC is to try the driver I posted from Compaq. It includes drivers for 2000 which should work for XP.

hi tgell, no need to apologize, i am very greatfull to you for your help. yes when i installed puppy i did have a linksys wireless-g notebook adapter ( 2.4 GHz 802.11g with speed booster) inserted in the slot this adapter did not work with the win xp pro installation because of the driver issue, i am begining to to think that win xp pro is to heavy for this machine although i know there is a guy on youtube who is running win home edition sp3 on the same machine smoothly the video title is my compaq presario 1700 if that's of any help again than you for your help.

I may be getting ahead of myself. My head my be screwed on backwards. First, you probably do not have a Conexant Combo modem/Lan. According to the Everest Report it is only a modem. Do you have a LAN port on the computer?

Also, is the model number for the Linksys adapter WPC54GS?

Here is a FAQ on installing it in XP. If you do not have the CD, install this driver (WPC54GS only). Unzip it to a folder on your desktop. In the instructions, you will not automatically install the driver, but instead click Install from a list or specified location. then point to the folder with the unzipped driver. In either case CD or download driver, you do not want to use the setup wizard.

    Support page for this adapter.

I can honestly say that I do not think that there is a LAN/NIC in this PC. I have looked thru both reports provided, and neither has any mention of any network controllers or adapters. However, if the OP is convinced that there is a NIC, you can try downloading the driver linked to in tgell's post above (post #15), then follow the steps in this thread to install the driver (just ignore the mention of "wifi" or replace "wifi" with "NIC"; or start at the phrase "Use TUGzip" to extract it"; all the steps are otherwise the same). I'm pretty sure that the Win2000 driver will work for WinXP; many Win2000 and WinXP are interchangeable, but not all of 'em. It's worth a try.

.... alternatively, I found this driver for XP for NIC only and it's in MANY other Presario 1700 series laptops. That doesn't mean it will work, or that if the OP's laptop has a NIC and that this is the driver for it (and it's likely that it isn't), but I suppose it's worth a try.

One other thing . . . . from what I've read so far, the OP has not told us if there are any question marks ? or any "Unknown Device" listings in the Device Manager. A screen shot or accurate description of the Device Manager would tell us a lot and could have possibly saved 15 posts or so. Also, is there any chance that the on-board is disabled in the BIOS?

So, you have a Linksys PCMCIA wifi card in the side of the laptop.... you'll need to remove the card and get the "Hardware Revision" number from the sticker . . . it will be revision 1.0 or 2.0 or 2.1. More info about this number and the driver can be found here: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/AE/en/support/WPC54GS/download Click the question mark next to "Where's my model number" to find out where to look for the "revision number", then scroll down a little and look at he links listed below the green "Download", then click on the link below that to download the driver. I recommend using the steps in this thread to install the driver, unless you want to use the Linksys Client Connection Utility to connect to your wireless router. Personally, I've found these 3rd party connection utilities to be much more cumbersome than the built-in WinXP wireless connection tool, but this is a matter of preference....

(BTW - installation & user guides can be found at the same link I just posted above - maybe they'll help . . . if using the Linksys 'setup' file (and not using the Device Manager to install the driver), you should probably run the 'setup.exe' file BEFORE inserting the card in the side of the laptop, then plug in the card when prompted by the install program; all this should be explained in either the user guide or install guide)

EDIT - use the "Setup Wizard" download; it's a .ZIP file and it's probably best to use the steps I linked to earlier in post #20 where it says "this thread"; but if you're not familiar or comfortable using the Device Manager (or the "Have Disk" method) to install drivers, then just unzip the download and run the 'setup.exe' file.

hi dlb, good and bad news, here is what happend i had to go with the linksys wizard, i tried the method in the post but the linksys file would not appear so i ran the wizard and finally it worked i had internet and was able to surf, it was very slow, typing on the address bar was also slow so i upgraded to ie8 but no change in performance i also installed firefox the latest ver. with the same results, i also installed winamp's latest ver that worked just fine, now i don't plan on adding anything else to this computer this is the setup i was going to return to my niece with no more no less but this morning i was going to try to fine tune it a little but when i turned it on it did not go in to the pheonix bios like usual, what i saw was multiple colored vertical line across the screen, then i could hear the windows opening theme but coulsd not do anything so i shut it down and restrated it and the same thing happend now i looked up this issue and some people say that it's the video card, some say it's the mobo, if you can shed some light on this please help, beacause i thouth i was almost finished with this, always thanking you in advance for your most appreciated help.
